Casey started. Playing with Auer up front. First half, no score.

I thought I was watching the highlight package, just realized it was the live game when your post and the yellow coincided.
It may be 1-0 at the half, but Schlake is laying siege.

The goal, btw, was great, from 20 out and off the side post and in. Great dive by teh keeper to stop it, but he had no chance.

Okay, must have been on heck of a half time talk. Mainz are insane right now, should have scored twice in the opening two minutes of the second half. didn't see who came on for the half (wasn't paying attention) but it was either casey or someone who looks like him who just got denied from six yards.

    Casey with a touch.

Here's what it looked like: long ball crosses to (I'm pretty sure) Casey, corner of the six yard box on the right side. Keeper follows the cross, Casey's header beats him, loops, but bounces off the post. The goal scorer is in on the rebound, sliding, and either mishits of get's blocked from a yard, because it goes sideways to the left side of the six box. There, someone sends another shot in that looks like it bounces off the left post, into the scorer (who is still on the ground) and in.
That's what I meant by wild scramble. :)

Thanks Buff. So it was Casey with the header then.

Okay, just saw the replay again. It was a really sad mishit on the shot off the first rebound.
And now shlake, 2-1. straight down the middle.

A classic Ailton goal, BTW. Nothing fancy, just a great burst and placement to die for.

Did Ailton ever gotten a sniff of the national (brazil, not qatar) team? No idea, but the man can flat out score. When we're producing enough players of that quality so that they're not automatics on the national team, then we've arrived.

According to this explanation, it was Auer with the original header off the cross-bar. Casey went for the ball but was brought down in the area. Weiland came from behind, and shot the ball of Bordon into the net.

Okay, I was messed up (my football watching screen is pretty small, and my german reeks). If Casey was the man brought down, he's actually the goalscorer, but this does not earn him great credit. The ball was falling in front of him and instead of putting a rather emphatic and simple header in, he opted for an attempt at a flippy-kick thing. A defender was touching him, but to call it a take down is a bit pro-wrestling, IMO. Weiland used him like a backboard to bounce the ball into the goal (and deserves credit for the goal). sorry, I thought casey was no. 7.

I was at the game along with 5,999 other mainzers. it's always been a dream of mine to see a schalke home match and now i have! unfortunately our boys in red couldn't pull it out, tho'. my first time on a german fan bus made up for it, however.

CC played ok, he hasn't been as active up front lately, as he was the first couple games of the season that he played. last week i attributed it to jet-lag, this week dunno. he challanged frank rost (04 keeper) in the first half and took an elbow to the head that left him with a bloody wound at one point. it seemed to piss him off, cause as soon as he re-entered the field he got the yellow for a wildly timed (and rash) shoulder charge. he seemed to have trouble holding the ball up front consistently, lost a few trying to dribble through two guys. not really his game (running at people) imho. did lay the ball off nicely on a couple occasions, and his flick-on to auer barely mistimed at one point, and just missed the goal. so the potential may be there for a partnership... last week CC was stepping on auer's runs and stuff... not so much this week.

on the goal... auer's header richocheted of the crossbar, as CC was battling for the rebound (inside the 6), the schalke defender pulled him down, to which CC threw his arms up in the typical "what the h3ll was that?" pleading to the ref. luckily, niclas weiland kept the play going and headed it off one of the defender's legs into the goal. two things struck me on the play...one was that CC might have done better (since the ball was still in play!) to get up off the ground and have another go rather than pleading for the call (probably not gonna get it on the road anyways)... secondly, was that he did a good job tho' in really being a handful for the defenders to deal with inside the 6...on the scramble he was battling two defenders and a third came to help out. he got a nice pat on the back from coach klopp after being substituted, dunno if that helps read the tea-leaves... i was actually surprised to see him start this week, actually given his flat performance last week. so, hopefully he can start being a bit more consistent and knock one in this week against rostock. :)

IMO, he also could have done more to keep his feet and put a head on the rebound. Maybe he was going for a PK. :)
