Sheesh. No wonder Yallop couldn't put up with him. Though I personally think Carrieri's pretty good and has some numbers to back it up. Sounds like his personality gets in the way of a lot of coach's decisions.
That was one hell of an interview. I can't wait for part II either. This was a great line "And when I talk with coach, he has no answers. I can't get anything across to this guy. I talk to him annually about why I'm not a regular starter."
Even though it's great to hear straighttalk rather than the usual clichés, you've got to think Carrieri isn't helping his chances of becoming a regular starter by speaking so candidly about his coach.
He reminds me of Steve Snow (I think it was Steve.) He was the greatest player ever - just ask him. Carrieri should stop flapping his jaw or he could him in the same boat as Snow.
Maybe he should talk with more frequently. Or maybe he's so annoying the coaches only give him one chance every year.
So, basically, Hankinson is an idiot for playing him out of position but Andrulis is a moron for not playing Cunny out of position? Sure, he tries to qualify the Cunningham thing later, but he just needs to deal.
Funny thing is, based on the 'tude shown in this interview, even with those numbers he'd also be right next to Kreis (and Razov) in the national team picture. I can't see Arena being the least bit interested in someone can't even pronounce "team player."
Would you want Carrieri on your team? I wouldn't, but he's a fun interview. Sort of reminds me of Jimmy from Seinfeld. "Chris doesn't like it when Coach doesn't play me. Mr. Carrieri doesn't like playing midfield. Coach should talk to CC more than once a year."
I wonder is Mark C. dared to mention to Chris that on the game they were watching (Man U. vs Real M.), that Beckham was on the bench, as was Raul, as was Conceciao (sp), I don't think Roy Keane or Nicky Butt were playing either. And Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has been playing out of position all year. Hell, why doesnt Sir Alex Ferguson just play his best 11, damnit. Arsenal should play Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Kanu, Wiltord, and Jeffers all at the same time. Grow up kid, your not the star player on your travel team anymore. Your a pro, act like it. All that being said, I think he should be playing forward ahead of ZiZi Roberts. James
Criticize him all you want, be it's hard to disagree with this: "I don't deserve to play ninety minutes for thirty games unless I'm scoring every game. But based on the beginning of the season, I should be up front, no doubt about it, one hundred percent. And if I don't do the job, that's when I sit." By all accounts Zizi was crap in preseason. Spencer was hurt. Schmidt was a raw rookie. I think he's got a legit beef here. Take that for what you will, but his attitude sounds a lot like an interview a read with Donovan while he was still at Asprin FC.
It's one game. Hankinson may be totally screwing things up there, but Chris Frigging Carrieri - who owes any and all success last year to Chung and Henderson - has very little right saying he's as good as the league's two best strikers because he had to play out of position for one cotton-picking game.
I always liked Carrieri for his nerve alone. Since his first official pronouncement, the draft day "guarantee" of a playoff berth for the Quakes, I knew he'd be a barrel of laughs. I happen to agree that his point production per minute is quite good. As he says, whether he can continue to produce at that level should determine our opinion of him. Yes, I would like to have him on my team.
I'll let others debate the merits of his points but in an era of "take it 1 game at a time" and "staying focused" and "giving 110 percent" and "just trying to keep our shape," you gotta lova someone that brash. You may not love him as a player, but you love reading it when he gets interviewed.
gotta agree with sandon and a few others looking forward to the next installments... believe me, there will be more with more writers... carrieri can put the ball in the back of the net, so we will be hearing his name for some time
I think he needs a chance to prove that he's a 90 minute player over the course of 4-5 games. If he can't cut it, and he's 100% healty, set his a$$ back down. I like Chris' confidence, but he needs to look at the finer points of his game, work on those, and put his head down and work his a$$ off. If he's been working on that, he deserves a chance IMHO. I also believe that at some point you've got to try and massage the egos of the talent that you have. Ferguson leaving Becks on the bench yesterday was nothing more than pure d coach ego. I prefer Sven's approach...
And he couldn't come back from that? What I meant is he will have the same love as Snow had, which was none.
I loved the interview, and I'd love to have him on my team. At least for a little while. It didn't seem like he was saying anything unreasonable. He said he deserves a chance, and I agree with him. Who knows how he'd handle it if he got his chance and didn't cut it, but he deserves the right to give it a shot, anyway.
