Yep, gotta take it with a grain of salt. Still thought it was interesting news. Would be nice to see another Socceroo playing in the Serie A in the lead up to the WC. Cagliari were after him last year I think too. Mind you like El Cap says really depends on his ability to get game time.

Italian press has been saying that both Livorno (newly promoted) and Cagliari are both interested in Valeri.

However, Cagliari have been told by the President of Grosseto that Valeri is not on the market.

Valeri, 25, has played four straight games for his Italian Serie B side Grosseto and feels he is in as good a shape as he has ever been in this vital season that will end with the World Cup in South Africa next June and July.

“We had a very good 2-1 win against Brescia at the weekend, which was fantastic because it was our third match in a week in which we got two wins and a draw,” Valeri said from Italy.

“I had problems with my knee last season and as soon as the football was over I had surgery to clean it up but my recovery took longer than planned so I started my pre-season late.

“I have now played four games for Grosseto and I’m back in top shape. Hopefully I’ll get picked for the games with Holland and Oman.

He also conceded that playing for an unfashionable second division side like Grosseto might put him at a slight disadvantage when it comes to national recognition.

“It might be a disadvantage in some people’s eyes but the people I need to impress are the Socceroos’ coaching staff and nobody else,” he said. “If they’re happy with me, then I’m happy.”

Valeri said he had tried to leave Grosseto for greener pastures for some time but the club invariably refused to let him go or asked too much for his services, thus scaring off any potential buyers.

“I’ve wanted to leave every year but the club has always made it hard by putting too big a price on my head,” he said.

"Many people do not understand that I am under contract till the end of the season and I’ve got to respect that. I can’t leave Grosseto unless they agree to sell me.”

Valeri has left Grossetto for Sassuolo, who are currently sitting in 4th on the Serie B table.

Hopefully he and Sassuolo get promoted next season. A promotion and a few good WC cameos would help him out a bit more.

Hmmmmmm

HE WAS good enough to play almost every minute at the World Cup for Australia, and earn glowing reviews - but apparently not good enough for Italy's second tier this season.

No wonder Carl Valeri has found the World Cup hangover hard to stomach.

The 26-year-old midfielder has had a miserable time since coming of age in South Africa - now an automatic pick for his country but frozen out at Serie B Sassuolo, playing less than half an hour all season.

But finally there is light at thend of the tunnel, with a likely starting spot against Paraguay on Saturday - and better prospects in clubland after Sassuolo coach Daniele Arrigoni left the club on Monday.

"Fortunately for me the coach got sacked just yesterday, so there'll be a new coach waiting for me when I get back. It was a tough situation previously, the coach didn't choose the players in the squad. I wasn't his kind of player and he made that clear, which I have to respect.

"It can leave you feeling quite sad, being overseas but not playing, I've always played at previous clubs. It's been a difficult challenge, but I just want to play.

The change in management at his club gives Valeri the chance of a fresh start, though he made it clear that in the absence of regular football he would have to seek a move elsewhere.

"The club knows that, my agent knows that, I know that. I'd like to stay at Sassuluo in the sense that I'm settled there. But if an offer came in from Serie A, or from overseas, I'd have to look at it.

Australia midfielder Carl Valeri has joined Italian second division side Ternana, his Serie A club Sassuolo announced. Valeri, 29, is understood to have moved clubs for a transfer fee of $610,000. The Socceroos midfielder had just come back to full fitness after a year out of the game due to a leg injury suffered on national team duty against Korea Republic in November 2012.

Valeri's childhood dream of playing in Serie A has taken a massive blow as Ternana is deeply entrenched in the bottom half of Serie B. He came so close to Serie A that he could smell it. But after managing only a handful of bench positions for Sassuolo this season as it battles to stay up, Valeri and his coach Eusebio di Francesco decided that changing clubs would be in the player's best interests.
