Drew Carey is very 'quippy' and quotable in this Soccer America interview out today. On the name for Seattle MLS: "Can't we talk about getting rid of Social Security, or national health care or something? Something that won't cause such a fight when I get together with the other owners?" On a 'soccer pub inside Qwest Field: "In Seattle, I don't think we'll need to mandate anything like drinking or scarves. It would be like requiring that everyone keep an umbrella handy in case it rains. Although, a pub inside the stadium is a great idea. I'll take it up with Paul Allen the next time we shoot darts together." Defining SuperLiga in 5 words: "1. Extra 2. Money 3. For 4. Mexican 5. Owners."
Wayne Brady as national anthem singer. Greg Proops, Ryan Stiles, and Colin Mochrie for halftime entertainment which'll be better than mini-soccer or dizzy-bat racing!
http://soccer-point.blogspot.com/2007/08/drew-carey-on-soccer.html Hey world, if you think you hate the United States now, just wait. Because little by little, year by year, we're getting better and better at the sport you call your own. And soon, as soon as ten years from now, we're going to own it. Think about it. There's 298 million people living in the United States right now. How many does your country have, huh? Unless you live in China, the answer is "not as many". And we only need so many of them to grow up playing soccer. Because on the world stage, it's just our best 11 against your best 11. And I'm telling you, brother, it's getting to the point where your best 11 just aren't going to be enough. Not really critical of the Germans, just blatantly hopeful for the USA.
By the way, Stiles lives just 90 miles away from Qwest Field in beautiful Bellingham. Runs a improv comedy club here, among other things. I'm sure he'll be an MLS Seattle regular with old buddy Drew.
Talk about continual *free* publicity for Seattle. Drew is bringing much more to the table than just his investment capital. 1/31/08: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/jan/31/no-writers-no-problem/ "I’m a big soccer fan and Seattle’s a really good market for professional soccer. They’re going to use the lower half of the bowl of Qwest Stadium, where the Seahawks play. They’ll cover up the top half and use the lower half. It was built for both football and soccer ... The stadium seats 24,500. We have commitments for over 11,000 season tickets. Soccer is huge in Seattle. I just don’t think I can go wrong."
