this thread will be for general discussion of the St. Louis Cardinals postseason run... game pbp be in separate threads -jim LONG LIVE THE GLORY OF ST. LOUIS
last year Matt Morris won the most games by a Cardinals pitcher since Bob Gibson Gibby went up to Morris to let Matt know that he thought he was a hell of a pither... Matt had been in fear of the one true Mr. October, who was probably the most intimidating pitcher to have ever played... he had never thought he should be in the same breath as Gibson, yet there he was... saying Morris was the man well, this year Morris has started the playoffs off by not only pitching well but by helping out at the plate... he had 2 rbi's... giving the Cards one more run than he received in the two games he pitched against the D-backs last year he scored a run for good measure i'm sure that the man who lowered the mounds is happy
Go Cards. Or D-Backs. Or Giants. Anyone except the Braves, really. But really, I AM rooting for the Cards, because they've just had such a bad year this year. (And also because with Gonzalez gone, I don't think the D-Backs can beat the Braves or the Yanks.)
12-2 Cards win in game one!! Damn, they beat up on the the Big Unit, while Morris held strong. Edmonds and Rolen came through with a couple big home runs to chase Randy early. Next game is going to be tough, Shilling v Finley and Arizona will probably throw everything at the Cards trying to avoid 0-2 going into St. Louis. Looks like Woody Williams won't be ready for game 3, so Benes is poised to fill in. Benes has been pitching lights out in the second half, time for him to keep it up in the playoffs.
2 games to none for the cardinals offensive outpouring in game one and two well pitched games by the cards the d-backs are on the ropes, it's time to crush them and lick our wounds for the next round
larussa said that rolen might have just played his last game of the year in post game interviews ************ ************ ************ ************ ************ ************ ************ x-rays were negative, they are going with a shoulder sprain, but it might be too much to come back with this post season ************ ************ ************ ************ ************
Son of a ************ing bitch, the ************ this team goes through. Between the Fire and the Cardinals, I must be supporting the two least lucky sports teams in the country.
Absolutely sickening. The guy should be fired (or worse). Here's the radio station: http://www.98kupd.com/ which has contact information.
You should've been clearer in the title of this thread. At first I was thinking about the Arizona Cardinals and thinking, "No f-ing way they're making the playoffs."
Re: Re: Re: Cardinals Playoff Discussion the same thing was said about them when they were still in st. louis
Not to jump ahead, but a Cardinals-Angels World Series would be perfect. Darryl Kile's last game was a victory over the Angels that put St. Louis in first place to stay. Jack Buck's death was announced after the game.
Now reports say that Rolen is out 12-14 days and that he would be able to play in the World (sic) Series. It would be a great series if it were Anaheim and St. Louis. I know that the bigwigs in NYC and ABC would just love that.
Screw ABC, they're showing this on ABC family (why?) which I dont get. In that case, go Anaheim. Really doesnt matter to me who the Cards play IF they make it to the National/World Series, any of the team would make good intersting match-ups in their own way. But, I'd really like to see the Cards win it all by taking out the Braves and then the Yanks, simply becuase I hate both those teams.
the yankees v the cards would be nice the two teams with the most titles, and we are possibly the only team that the yankees have a losing record against (of more than one world series against) i think our record against them is 3-2 in the world series (it's a winning record, i'm just not completely sure of the number of times we have faced them) i would also bet that any cardinals world series would have the best tv numbers of any world series in a while bigwigs are thinkign all wrong, but nothing new with that
cards on to the next round rolen out 12-14 days.. recovery time i could see him pinch hitting in the next series LONG LIVE THE GLORY OF ST. LOUIS
Pujols delivers with Bat, Arm - MLB.com Cards ride Karma into Postseason - MLB.com the St. Louis Post Dispatch should have a ton of articles
in an ap article in my local newspaper... selig said that baseball would not have anymore 10pm games during the playoffs this proclamation was due to the cadinals having to play in arizona at 8pm pdt, yet 10pm cdt on abc family it had been publicly stated that the channel couldn't move the game up because of prior commitments... to many this meant the 2 half hour reruns of "whose line is it anyways?" (the crappy american version) and "untamed hearts" which was before the reruns however, this was because there were 3 playoff games that day and baseball had an unwritten rule that they will try and not have 2 games being played at the same time... if at all possible this resulted in newspaper stories in st. louis bringing up stories of lil' kids crying when they found out that they couldn't watch the game because their bed time was before the game started... laugh all you want, but i can recall my parents letting me stay up to watch games in 85 and 87... i'd watch until i fell asleep, they told me that's what i did in 82 as well (although i probably wasn't really watching)... those games weren't at 10pm either they were prime time games this is st. louis, this is big... we have the second most storied history in all of baseball... at the present time, we are america's team you don't give us the shaft... it will eat you alive 96 was the beginning of the return to glory... la russa had just taken us to the playoffs... this year marks the 4th time he has taken us, the third in a row -in '96 we were led by the best starting staff in baseball... including matt morris, andy benes, alan benes, and todd stottlemyre... no team had more "quality" starts than st. louis the cards swept the padres, and then were knocked out by the braves in 7 -in '00 will the thrill led us to october with an insane finish to a brilliant career... he was a last ditch effort for big mac that paid huge dividends the cards swept the braves (payback) and then were knocked out by the mets in 5 -in '01 a rookie by the name of pujols shouldered the load that was big mac's like no one else could have, matt morris also challenged for the cy young and woody williams stepped up after his trade from st. louis to be an amazing starter for the redbirds the cards were knocked by the d-backs in 5 -in '02 the team has rallied around each at every step... up and down... a team that lost 2 gigantic pieces in mr. st. louis, jack buck, and team leader, darryl kile... it's safe to say they haven't left yet, they're still with these guys... and i doubt they ever leave them... but this one ain't done yet so far we have swept the d-backs and are waiting to see who we take on in the NLCS currently the cards need to avenge post season series losses to: -NY Mets (not this year though) -Minnesota Twins (possible and would kill for that) -KC Royals (not this year, and possibly ever) -Detroit Tigers (see KC Royals) not too bad really... we have already avenged playoff defeats to all other teams we have ever lost to (twice avenged world series losses to the yankees and currently hold a 3-2 record against them in the fall classic)
I was making this very arguement with my dad last night. It's absurd how these games have been scheduled, and being on ABC family there's probably quite a few cards fans in the Chicago area that aren't able to see these games. Why is it such a problem to have games at the same time? Sure, one game will probably rate lower than if it was by itself, but the other will probably rate much higher. Just doesn't make any sense business wise, let alone what's best for the fans, to have games at odd times. F MLB and F Disney for all their mismanagement of the game.
bigwigs overthink everything and in doing so will always forget what exactly are the important things... such as making sure you have an audience
I think the placement of numerous games on ABC Family is cynical. I read some allusions to contractual obligations between MLB and the "network" created when it was under the Fox umbrella as Fox Family. But the references in the Sports pages were not clear and it seems to me that the games could have aired on ESPN/ESPN2/(even Classic) if Disney had wanted them there. ABC Family doesn't even have proprietary identifiers to designate the broadcast as an a "ABC Family" production (Fox Family did, at least. It also habitually aired regular season games). We see ESPN graphics, ESPN broadcasting teams, just a different outlet. For me, the "bigwigs overthink everything" comment is particularly appropriate to this situation. I'm incredulous in believing that ABC gains a lot of cross promotional opportunities. Few adult men (which I presume dominates the DS viewership audience) will stick around to watch 7th Heaven reruns. Therefore, I think Disney strategized to pressure cable companies to carry the channel. But even if I was irate that I couldn't see my team, I wouldn't scream for a channel that I'd only watch 3 days out of a year. The strategy seems to hurt the very product they're employing as a tool.
at the end of last year, he thought it would be too hard to get back to where had been and that the team would be better off using his salary to bring in new players... with it they got jason isringhausen and tino martinez ---------------------------------------------------------- looks like we are taking on the giants... should be a good one, the cards have home field too
