There's been a lot of talk about a certain fiery German-American CM and his propensity to find his way into the referee's book, so I went through the records and compiled the numbers. Jones has a long way to go to catch Earnie Stewart, and another controversial US CM may have the best chance. American suspensions in World Cup qualifying, including red cards, since the 1994 World Cup. 4 – Stewart* 3 – Reyna 2 – Agoos, Bradley, Harkes, C Jones, Lewis, Onyewu 1 – Beasley, Berhalter, Bocanegra, Caligiuri, Cherundolo, Convey, Gibbs, Hejduk, Howard, Lalas, Llamosa*, Pope, Wynalda Red cards only: 2 – C Jones 1 – Agoos, Cherundolo, Convey, Lewis, Onyewu *1. Some of my data may be wrong for 1998 and 2002 as I relied on FIFA data, which doesn't detail actual suspensions so I guessed based on their lineups for the next matches. But it appears that unlike 1998, 2006, 2010 and I assume 2014, in the 2002 cycle there was no yellow card carryover between rounds. Otherwise Armas and Regis would have 1, Llamosa would have 2 and Stewart would have 5. Also, Altidore would have 1 if they carried over from the end of qualifying. 2. Jermaine Jones would join some excellent company if he makes this list. All but Llamosa, Gibbs and Armas (if he's counted) have started a World Cup match, and even then Llamosa was still a sub and the other 2 only missed out due to injury. 3. I think there are only 3 players that have gotten themselves purposefully yellow carded; Bradley against Cuba in 08, and I suspect Lalas and Stewart did so as well at home against Costa Rica in 1996 as the US was up and they both got carded in the last minutes. But 1996 was several years before my time, so I may be wrong.
