I'm looking at this poll on dcunited.com and 71% of people are saying that Petke should wear the captains arm band. I was shocked to see this. Etcheverry has to be the captain. Nothing against Petke, I know he is a fan favorite, but he has yet to play a game for DC United. Thoughts?

Yikes, what happen, when I voted most wanted Etch. Of course it should be Etch., with out a doubt I don't even know why they put that up, of course it's Etch, I guess they're bored at dcunited.com and can't wait till the season starts too, gotta get those message boards moving. :)

    Petke is a wanker. :)

    That's a good question though ...

Olsen - Old timer. Perhaps the new team leader.

Etch - Maybe past his prime in a leadership role. It depends on whether or not he intends to captain by standing with his hands on his hips looking incredulously at the ref. If that's all he's capable of doing then ... no, never should he wear the armband.

    Nelsen - I don't know. Maybe.

Convey - Old timer (that's still weird). And it might be good to groom him for a leadership role.

Rimando - Would be higher but I think captains should be on the field.

Reyes - As much as I like him I just don't see it.

    Earnie - Cuz he's Earnie.

Stoichkov - It's hard to be captain from the bench and I still think that's where he's gonna be most of the time.

    Petke - As I said ... Wanker.

    Re: Re: Captain

From reading other people's threads about meeting him they say that he is awesome. At the viewing party for the US-Argentina game I think someone said they met him and that he was really cool. Someone wrote a report earlier who is down in Florida and said that he is a fan favorite. I can't wait to meet the guy.

I wrote one of the reports (my friend and I were next to him), but a bunch of people met him.

Yes, he is very very cool. Watched the game without the cool detachment of most players - he watched it like a fan, cheering and booing (and bantering) with all of us. Great guy.

those polls are bogus. It seems that always about 20 minutes after i vote and one guy it winning by 72% with 300 people voted , i get back on and someone else has a huge margin and 1020 people voted. crazy

Just wait til the season start and see what kind of person Mikey is!! If you can't wait... Go to NY and ask metro stars fans about him and im pretty sure you going to see some tears filling their eyes. Mike petke is the man!! Tough on the pitch and cool off the pitch. BUT it's a surprise that %70 voted for him but i still don't mind.... that's my boy ;)

IF we had to get a new captain, I would go with Olsen or Convey since they are the future of the team (until they leave for Europe).

Olsen has a lot to prove before he can even think about Europe. Convey will need some more muscle.

They would make the worst captains in the history of soccer. Bobby is 18 and olsen is 22 or something and both still trying to find their game so it's too early to have them captains. Etch is the captain no matter what everybody say.... he still the leader of this team.

I think the folks at Nottingham Forest would welcome him back today if given the option.

Also, BigBaller, Olsen is will be 26, and Convey is going to be 20 in May. However, I agree that the captain's armband is Marco's as long as he feels he is the best man for the job.

I was just taking a cue from hockey, if you are going to be the foundation of the team for years to come, it only makes sense to hand over the reigns. I don't think you should strip Etch of his C (unless he does something stupid), but he doens't have many more years left.
As for age, Owen wore the C for part of an friendly when Beckham came off. And he was only 21 at the time.

There are only 4 players I'd even consider for captain:

    Marco Etcheverry
    Ryan Nelsen
    Ben Olsen
    Earnie Stewart

Obviously Etch will be captain unless he freaks out and slaps Hudson or something similarly bizarre. Out of this group I'd say Stewart is the most skilled captain, but Hudson also knows that you can't have a new player just show up and become captain, no matter who he is. As far as "captains of the future" go, I lean more towards Ryan Nelsen than Olsen. Nothing against Olsen...it's just that Nelsen has this hardass attitude about him. He seems well liked by his teammates, and at the same time is no one to be trifled with. He seems like the kind of guy who can pull the team up off the ground when we're flat or on the ropes.

I think the situation for the future is like the Washington Capitals. Steve Konowalcuk is their captain and while he isn't the best player, he is the heart and soul of the team. I agree with you on Nelson for the future.

I agree with JAnderson14, there are only 4 guys who can be considered for Captain, and he named them. As for "Captain of the future", sorry, but that's BS, no such position exists. With trades, injuries, transfers, etc. all you can do is groom a player or several players to be ready in the future. There can never be any pre-ordained captains.

I'd be most happy if Olsen wore the armband, but with Etch and Stewart on the team, it will likely go to one or the other of them. I'd rate Nelsen as my distant 4th in this race.

While I love Convey and am firmly in favor of grooming him for potential Captaincy in the future, he simply doesn't deserve it yet. Frankly, until he moves into central midfield I doubt I'd be in favor of him being considered for Captain at all.

As for Petke, I've always liked his play and his attitude, but I'm fairly confident that his leading in the pole is a reflection of Metros fans checking our site. But who knows, maybe with the announcement of the two Washington Freedom doubleheaders, the website has attracted a lot of females that are voting for Petke because of his looks. But as far as Captaincy is concerned, Petke's not in the running. Certainly Hristo would be ahead of Petke for consideration, and I doubt Hristo's even in the running.

I'm also not a fan of the keeper wearing the armband, but Nick is a definite leader of the team and should be a candidate added to JAnderson14's list.

Olsen is my pick. Let Marco concern himself with the play of the game, and Ben can run the players. Marco's problem when he's captain, is that he's too much in the game and tends to 'go off' on officials. Sure, they need it, but we still need to deal with the idiot with the whistle for the rest of the game.

Convey has shown some leadership, especially of late with the U-20 team, and according to reports, the lockerroom. But, he's just starting to emerge as a professional player. Let him get that bit settled before heaping more responsibility on the kid. We tend to forget that, even though he's entering his fourth season, that he still can't legally drink.

Mikey may be all good and fine, I just can't see giving the armband to someone fresh out of a MetroPuke jersey who hasn't done squat for our team yet. Marco has earned and deserves to be our captain. As far as tears in their eyes, that would be the toxic waste dump that is the Meadowlands. :D

Etch may be the Captian until he leaves but Olsen is the "Heart and Soul" of this team. Just look at the impact his return had on last years team. His return coinsided with the teams winning run. Olsen should be the next Captain of DC United.

    I agree.
Longevity, leadership, vision, commitment, and respect from teammates are the factors I believe

Well, I put in my 30 votes for Benny.

(Keep in mind that 1 vote does not equal 1 person. You can sit there and vote as much as you want, so 1 person with and hour to kill and suggest that Petke should be the captain. As Ridiculous as that is.)

Yes, I sense there has been a bit of ballot stuffing on the part of the Wanker. The culprits? Perhaps the Metroscum fans or even the Wanker himself (or proxies for him)...

Anyway, there is no way the Wanker should be even in that poll. I'd vote for Namoff before Wanker if for nothing else than his recent removal from the Metrostench!
