...for play by play of the US matches.

Did anyone else think he did a pretty good job doing the superliga final last night?

He doesn't have the smoothest voice, but the guy keeps it simple and concentrates on the game. He banters about a little with the commentator but that's a good thing because it's always centered around the action not cute anecdotes. He knows when to get excited... unlike dave o'brien... while not having an orgasm like rob stone.

He is good whenever I have heard him, professional and knowledgable.

ESPN's best play-by-play commentators are Derrick Rae and JP Dellacamara. No one else even comes close. Hopkins is decent but I wouldn't say he's great or anything.

I don't understand why ESPN won't get Rae to do MLS games. The MLS season doesn't coincide with Champions League so there's no conflict.

Hopkins + JP would be a nice combo. Wynalda is great.

    JP Dellacamera is good.

But I think we just need to get Martin Tyler to come over from England. That man is teriffic.

I have heard of Martin Tyler in passing. I will have to pay attention who is broadcasting EPL games.

I think the main point was that ESPN already has great soccer commentators. They just don't know what to do with them....like hiring a baseball guy to be the lead commentator for the World Cup.

I say Bring Back Jack! For 2010, he is so great, especially the 2002 world cup, but maybe people think we would of almost loved any announcer doing the games since we got all the way to the quarters? Maybe not but Bring Back Jack!

You might recall him from the 2002 world cup and him saying

    "There throbbing Portugal" Jack Edwards!

Why? They were actually good, enthusiastic, and stayed on the topic. They know what they are talking about unlike DOB and Balboa.

ESPN needs to "climb the ladder" and get Ty back in the fold.

haha, that Line is BURNED IN MY MEMORY. The line made very little sense ("throbbing Portugal?"), but I still think Jack Edwards is one of the best PBP commentators ESPN has had. He was a bit of a homer (calling Friedel the best or 2nd best keeper in the world), but he stayed on topic & he was enthusiastic.

A bit of a homer is an understatement, don't you think?

I heard John Madden wants the analysist job for soccer. He also said his favorite player is Gooch. He also has listed the All-Madden US Soccer Team.

    Here's the list!

    GK-Thornton
    DF-Gooch
    DF-DeMerit
    DF-Conrad
    DF-Favre
    MF-Mastroeni
    MF-Marsh
    MF-Mathis
    MF-Favre
    F-Jaqua
    F-Cooper

C'mon, there is no way you can call Jack's support for Brad homer-ish for one reason.
I very much doubt that Jack is a Martian. :)

I believe the exact line was "throbbiling." either way it certainly wasn't english.

i'd like to see allen hopkins get more shine than his usual sideling reporting. he seems knowledgable of the sport and sounds like he actually enjoys soccer.

Get out of fantasyland and come back down to earth. But your right, Jack's not a homer, because I doubt he's from England.
