A bigger potential advantage is the NT. TFC has been reasonably good (for a single team) at developing talent up to the level of an MLS sub. So there are a whole pile of guys who have come through the TFC system and even gotten caps at the NT level.

What TFC has been fairly bad at is developing them to the next step of being a solid MLS starter or graduating them to Europe. So most of those guys never become NT mainstays. The only ones I can think of with double digit caps are Doneil Henry, Ashtone Morgan, and Osorio. (And Osorio didn't come up through their academy system.) That's a waste of developmental effort and talent.

Happily, the early signs are that they want to change that. Also, it seems the kids coming up now are a lot better than they were a few years ago. Nelson, Shaffelburg, Priso, and Marshall-Rutty are just higher calibre than guys like Manelle, Babouli, or Aparicio were at that age. So the jump off point toward the NT will be that much higher.

I'm convinced that if we had Shaffelburg over Tabla, Nelson over Raposo, Okello over Mecalfe - add Fraser and we could have qualified for the olympics

In fairness to the previous guys you mentioned - some of them were wasted by the lack of minutes in MLS. I think TFC got better at developing guys up to a certain point but not playing them will always negatively impact their development and unless a US club takes a chance on them like Louisville and LAFC did with Kaye, being Canadian makes them unattractive.

My issue with TFC was always that, bringing in American guys and giving them such a longer leash than young Canadians who weren't allowed to make mistakes.

As for the surplus - they should be loaned or sold, not benched than released like in the past. CPL is interesting for the loaning opportunities but they aren't allowing more than 5 loans from MLS and to my surprised, it's league-wide

They were but I also think the new crop is simply better. We're talking about kids who are seeing the first team at 16 and 18 whereas the earlier guys were being brought up to the first team when they were already 20 or 22.

Do you have a source for that? I'm not questioning it, I'd just like to learn more. I know the CPL had a rule that a CPL club could not loan in more than two players from any one team. I assumed that was to prevent them from becoming pseudo-farm teams for the MLS sides, which is fine. A limit of 5 league wide seems unnecessarily restrictive, however, and doesn't help general Canadian player development.

I think that a change of philosophy/management was a reason too so I'd say there are both factors.

I saw a tweet from CPL saying that they have filled all 5 loans spot from MLS. Yet another dark rule that they choose not to advertise. Clanachan had said in an interview to the French online media Culture Soccer that the maximum from MLS was 5. I thought it was 5 per teams for the longest time until I saw that tweet.

As of now, there are 5 loans from MLS on CPL squads. I used to think that this would affect MLS U23 teams once MLS Next launches but looks like it won't after all. Guys will have to choose at some point between U23 squads vs. CPL - remains to be seems how the salary structure works there.

might be back before the end of the season as he has started to run despite his ankle injury. Latest on his next destination links him with Liverpool as Lille is expected to sell lots of players this summer.

Tajon Buchanan is attracting the interest of Portugal's Sporting CP and both France Ligue 1 and English Premier League clubs

    Clubs licensing
Believe or not, it's only as of 2017 that the CSA created the Canada Soccer Professional Club Licensing Program which includes the Canada Soccer National Club Licence. The program's goal is to raise the standards of clubs throughout the country both on and off the field toward best principles for development to improve the overall soccer system in Canada.
    https://canadasoccer.com/news/canada-soccer-announces-professional-club-licensing-renewals-for-2021/

7 CPL clubs had their licenses renewed while the 3 MLS clubs and FC Edmonton will renew theirs later this year. This is to show how disorganized the game was prior to Montagliani's tenure at the CSA.

Considering that loans from MLS represent a good pool for CPL teams (i.e. young Canadians as opposed to loaning in a foreign player), how do they work that? I mean, it would not be unreasonable for each CPL team to have one or two MLS youngsters on their loan candidate list. So is it just a race to see which team can sign them first?

    Canadian Premier League
Due to the pandemic, the start of the season will most likely be moved to June in a "bubble" environment. The main candidate to host the start of season is the Investor's Group Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Although there was no CPL teams in the Champions League, York United's Lisandro Cabrera was loaned to Club Atletico Pantoja in the Dominican Republic. The 23 years old Argentinian scored a goal against Monterrey. It's a good sign that CPL seems to get better with their international signings this early in their existence

    Future Division 2
The name "Canadian National League" has been trademarked and an announcement seems imminent.

The clubs would be in Western Canada and would force the withdrawal of current clubs in USL although the CSA prefers they do it voluntarily

Who is left in the USL right now other than TFC II?

How would they expect TFC II to move to the CNL if the CNL is only out west?

    CONCACAF Champions League
LW Jacob Shaffelburg, CDM Ralph Priso and Jonathan Osorio with the only TFC goal, started in a brutal 3-1 loss to Cruz Azul. While the club had promised changes, Luke Singh and Noble Okello were left on the bench and at some point, all Canadians were pulled.. sigh*

*That's not just my criticism - it's increasing within the fanbase who are noticing. Granted, Laryea was missed big time.

    Copa Sudamericana
    RB Juan Cordova
