Sunderland is a shit team, but not a small club. If the Toon is a big club, so are they (especially since their last trophy was in the 1970s and before the Toon last won something).
Oh I'm sorry, you forgot the part where your team were ok with one bid and then the next moment decided it was too low.
My point was that they're a mid-table type of club and they still have money to spend. If you look at the numbers on transfermarket you can see that the Prem teams have a much higher cumulative value than the Spanish teams. http://www.transfermarkt.com/en/premier-league/startseite/wettbewerb_GB1.html http://www.transfermarkt.com/en/primera-division/startseite/wettbewerb_ES1.html It shows RM and Barca as being worth 565M+, but the next best club is Atletico Madrid at 218M. That figure would only be good for 7th in England. So while the top 2 in Spain are stronger, there's a pretty huge dropoff after that. You would not often see a player like Berbatov, Altidore, or Wanyama bought by a Spanish club in the bottom half of the table. They don't have the finances to make those signings. That's a result of the bad league structure and the lack of profit sharing.
Yes he should be worth less than Negredo and Soldado. They are probably not as good as Higuain but they don't have question marks over their fitness like Higuain does.
Germany's No. 2 and 3 most wealthy teams - Schalke and Dortmund - don't makes as much COMBINED as do Bayern.

This seems hard for people outside to understand - but no one here cares about attracting name players and building global appeal. The focus is still pretty much on going to games and drinking beer, or simply following your team without having to pull your trousers down for Sky (unfortunately they have now turned up).
