So in a state there will be 4 candidates for let's say the Dem party to become governor. To vote for one of the 4 you like, you have to be a register Democrat or else you have to wait until the general when the Dem primary takes on the GOP primary winner.
If Labour has 3 candidates that want to mayor of Rotterdam for instance. You must register as a labor party member in order to choose which one of the candidates gets to run as the Labor candidate for mayor. Now if you are arguing declaring a party is dumb and people should always be able to vote for whoever with no party affiliation well then, all I can say is 'Murica! ******** Yeah!!
Because states run elections. Doesn't matter if it is for local city council or for President, states run the election, not the federal government.
Yeah, the state organizes the election, but who the Democratic party/Reps put on the voting bill isnot the concern of the state, nor who these parties let vote to decide which candidate from a bunch it will be.
I actually see it as a tool in certain states to gerrymander voting districts borders, or worse to use that registration process to cancel black voters or other non-wites.
That's due to the corruption of the system, not due to the system. The problem is the willingness by those in power to allow (or even to orchestrate) the corruption. You can change the system any way you want, and if the willingness is there they will find a way to corrupt it.
It kind of is the state's concern. Each state is rules for which a candidate of any office can be on the ballot. It is one of the reasons RFK Jr is not on the ballot in all 50 states.
@feyenoordsoccerfan here, candidates are NOT selected by a relatively small group of insiders*. Instead, they’re chosen by the masses. You don’t have to be a dues paying member of the party. It’s not like what happened in Britain whenever BoJo or the lettuce queen resigned and had to be replaced. Let me try to put it into soccer terms. As I understand it, in Spain, they have paid supporter groups, and those supporters vote for club president. But it’s not every fan of the club, just those who pay the membership fee. That’s not how Democrats and Republicans pick candidates. Imagine if everyone in Madrid could choose to register as a fan of Real Madrid or Atletico or Rayo Vallecano (and any other clubs I’ve missed) and then ALL those fans voted to pick the club president. And oh yeah, imagine these elections piggy back on Madrid’s system for voting for mayor and president and all that. *Some places deviate from this. Utah has a unique system, for example that @rslfanboy could detail for us. Republicans in Virginia used an insiders’ convention rather than mass voting to select Youngkin as their candidate.
We have a hybrid. The parties both have their primaries like usual. Dem is open. GOP has a closed nominating convention to registered members who have to physically attend in person. The winners then go to second round with those who qualify using the 3rd route: 3rd route is to collect enough signatures to be on the ballot, and then a vote between the convention nominee and those who collected enough signatures in time. Romney did the signature route because he was worried the whacko GOP here wouldn’t choose him. He was almost right, and won the GOP senate nomination in the closed convention just barely. So he essentially double tapped. This signature law was passed as centrist candidates in the GOP were getting worried about the whackos taking over. (Prescient.) This year, our GOP is even more nutz. Our very popular governor was actually booed at the state GOP convention, as he has been outspoken about being civil and not passing laws to punish 3 trans kids playing high school sports in all of Utah. Also, he’s vetoed some outrageous stuff that has been rammed through our short legislation window. Apparently, that’s all too much. He lost the GOP convention something like 65 to 30 for some asshole who was convicted of leading an illegal ATV ride through federally protected lands in Southern Utah as the mayor of those same lands. He’s now suing to get our Governor kicked off the ballot and him instated as the GOP candidate, because he thinks the signature law is unconstitutional. The law was fairly recently passed and already been tested in the courts, and upheld. Our popular Gov had held off from endorsing Trump, but I think the Black lady thing put enough pressure on him to endorse Trump. And in classic Trump fashion, the first event they do together was the Arlington fiasco, for which Gov Cox has apologized for, saying he didn’t know that Trump was going to turn it into a campaign event. Leopards gonna leopard.

From CNN/SSRS research. https://s3.documentcloud.org/docume...georgia-and-pennsylvania-are-key-toss-ups.pdf Top line: Reading through the rest.
How can Harris be ahead in Georgia and tied in PA? I realize they are just two snapshot polls, but it seems incongruous.
This one is pretty good as well... i don't know why this video from @TessRafferty isn't burning up this app but... let's fix that.#VoteBlueUpandDownBallot pic.twitter.com/eaHNoMdPCr— Steve Marmel (@Marmel) September 4, 2024
There was another poll somewhere that said the same, or similar. My guess is the issue of fracking is negatively effecting some Harris support while the Black (female) support is GA is very large. I think something like a third of the electorate in GA is Black.
Immigration. It is the one issue that the GOP are able to legit negatively saddle Harris with, because she was the "boarder tsar." Not that this is really accurate, but she did do some work, and the Republican propaganda machine worked successfully.
You need to add context to your posts. I was quickly checking all the news sites to see if he was shot again, but all I saw was the boring school shooting headlines.
I think Trump will win not from prison. Sorry i'm late to the party. but I'm guessing most of you think Kamala will win?
