Well for example with "her emails" it isn't Haberman who decided to have 169 stories about it - those decisions about balance, focus, framing etc are made at the editorial level. A beat reporter does not decide what is on the dotcom homepage Where i tend to agree is Charlie's point that the Gossip Girl Goebbels* era of coverage did end up normalising something quite horrific. I am not sure that was the intention of the reporters involved, but Haberman did promote a lot of Javanka palace style intrigue as entertainment. * Hope Hicks - one of the primary sources I am the last to defend the Times. The editorial decisions of late are insane. But i do think as liberals, we have a duty not to trash all the good reporting that is still happening on a daily basis - including the Maggie/Swan piece. If both left and right attack the media - what is left?
Right - but that is an existential issue that needs to be confronted by management and people who run news rooms not beat reporters See for instance the way Zaslav as CEO, decided to 're-centre' CNNs newsroom to be more attractive to conservative viewers. That is a decision taken at a much higher level than reporters. The reporters don't get to decide to do something that goes against Zaslav and the editorial line
Wow - did old boy have his teeth out or something? Meiselas: This is some of the worst slurring I’ve ever heard. Trump appeared to be in steep cognitive decline when speaking to Elon. pic.twitter.com/7neiPoQV16— Acyn (@Acyn) August 13, 2024
He's using (allegedly), not abusing. Most people who use drugs are functioning adults without a whole lot of side effects. That being said, I repeatedly repeat the claim made by someone else don't sue me that his decades of outfitting in poopy diaper haberdashery is most likely one of those side effects.
Here is another proxy that can be used. A rising tide... Speaking of rising tides, if Florida is in play (which yesterday's polls suggest) then Texas is too. I have a gut feeling Trump is about to fire his whole staff.
Florida and in play should never be used in the same sentence by Democrats...lol. This state is a gone for the Blue team. The Harris campaign may try a head fake there but they are not stupid enough to spend any serious money in that dumpster fire of a state. At this point, the best bet is and should be NC, much less expensive and with an absolute whack job running for governor, it may be ripe for the picking.
Just to add https://www.axios.com/2022/02/10/trump-records-national-archives-toilet-flush While President Trump was in office, staff in the White House residence periodically discovered wads of printed paper clogging a toilet, per Maggie Haberman's forthcoming book "Confidence Man." She knew about this while she had access from 2016-2020 and wrote it a book in 2022.
That was my point. Reporters and news organizations can be good. And they can be bad. And they can be both at the same/competing times (mostly because they have a very broad and wide ranging remit).
Never say never. One thing about Florida is it will one of two states (along with Louisiana) which gets hit the hardest by climate change/rising sea levels. That will turn a lot of voters towards the party that helps with those issues, which at this time is the Dems. Sure, the Dem party is really bad in Florida, but it is not a place like most of the Bible Belt where it is near impossible. Trump is having issues in swing states, and Vance is following Harris around. Why not do a stop or two or three in Florida. If not to freak out the Trump campaign, but also for the longer play of showing that Florida is not being ignored. Agreed about NC. And thinking about this, it almost seems like all Harris is doing is campaigning. It's almost as if Biden has said, "Kamala, I'm taking everything unnecessary off your plate so you can win that damn election."
Never say never indeed...May be 40 yrs from now things will change in Fl. However for the next 8 to 10 yrs, not a chance. Republicans have a 1 M registered voters advantage over the Dems in the state. It has become a magnet for the far right, bigots and other cranks since covid. It is a lost cause for the time being.
Mmm, you can't help Florida, unless the average earth temperature drops 1 degree, preferably more. If sealevel rises, considering what most of Florida is made of, Florida is gone. Edit: the good thing about that is that it stops existing, so no more voting there.
It still really annoys me that the US Intelligence knows stuff about Trump/Russia which is not public. Trump has now on multiple occasions stated that he spoke with Vladimir Putin about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The question journalists MUST ask — WHEN were such Trump-Putin conversations? If *after* leaving the White House, then they were likely ILLEGAL under the Logan Act.— Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) August 13, 2024
I don't hold high hopes, but there are some indicators that the race in Florida is somewhat moving towards Dems, even if it still is very difficult for them to win. They just released a 47 Trump /42 Harris /5 RFK poll, and it seems like Rick VoldeScott is being forced to spend tons of his money (thanks Lara and the RNC!). Additionally, there will be an abortion question on the ballot, plus all the kerfuffle at the Florida university system and Disney, plus all the issues with housing prices and insurance that hopefully people can link to the ineptitude from DeathSantis and the Rethuglicans. The cherry on the pie could be the callouness that the GQP and Trump have showed towards Venezuela, hopefully converting some MAGAzolanos into Dems. I'm not saying that Dems will win, but surely it looks like the election will be a lot closer than expected.
More good news D+3 is a huge turnaround Today's update. Harris is *still* gaining on Trump on our national polling average, now 3.1 points.https://t.co/vsGVG18HHI pic.twitter.com/rK9UtQr9fO— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) August 13, 2024

Exhibit # 3456.....The same issue we have been talking about all day. This tweet summarizes it perfectly.
The two states in article are PA & NC. “Ever since Vice President Kamala Harris entered the presidential campaign three weeks ago, polls and campaign finance data have shown how the race has changed. She has come from behind to build a small lead over former President Donald Trump in national polls and in several swing states, and she raised far more money than he did last month,” the New York Times reports. “Now, new voter registration data in two swing states adds to the evidence that Ms. Harris’s candidacy has energized potential Democratic voters.”
