When dark forces on the right started throwing money at RFK Jr to steal votes from the Democrats, it seemed like a catastrophe. If RFK Jr ends up stealing more votes from Trump and ensures Democratic victory, it might just be the funniest goddamn thing ever. It’s like George Costanza pulling a golf ball out of a whale’s blowhole, but on a cosmic level.
I still am skeptical of polls/data for a variety of reasons. 2022 with GOP sponsored ones with flooding everything, things like 18-34 year olds doing a massive shift to Trump (which has me laughing). Trump having a 6 point lead in Michigan of all places for instance. And of course the fact that they barely shifted post debate. Part of the thing that bugs me with data people is that they tend to treat it like it's a religion. Which is not good when it comes to analysis.
Barring 2016, Michigan's been consistently Dem since 1992. 2016 was close that if things went Hillary's way just a tad she'd win. On the state level, it says a lot that it took an independent commission to make things balanced given that the MI GOP gerrymandered things in their way. I mentioned before Oakland County, for a good chunk of my life it was ran by a guy who epitomized country club Republican (With a massive dose of racism). Now? It's being run by an openly gay Dem who helped turn Ferndale from a working class suburb to a place that's super expensive to live in.
I don't have the intestinal fortitude to follow the Trump campaign. Just can't do it. So I'm not sure if this perception is 100% accurate. But it seems to me is that Trump is pretty much alone on the campaign trail. Now, there's couch-abuser Vance out on the trail, of course, but he doesn't seem to be much of a messenger. Are other family members out on the trail, too? Any other effective surrogates? I actually conjured up the strength to look at his campaign website, and it has a handful of events planned over the next several days, a couple including Trump, the rest with just Vance. I'm sure Trump's got more appearances than that planned on the Mar-a-lago golf course. My point being, what I see developing with the Harris campaign is the potential for a rather large number of energized surrogates, plus a highly effective and energetic candidate and, soon, a VP candidate, all on the trail at the same time. Are the Obamas going to make some appearances, for example? And, following up on the point @Kazuma was making, when Harris goes to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and lots of other states, there are popular, well-spoken, on-message major local political figures who can come out and appear with her. As opposed to the nutjobs promising civil war if Trump doesn't win that he often shares the stage with. Leaving the unanimity, talent and depth of the Harris/Dem campaign aside for the moment, for Trump, this really is a feature, not a flaw. No one of stature can co-exist with Trump, because he always needs to have the spotlight on him. Which means he's alone, Charles Foster Kane-like, mumbling his stream of consciousness bullshit. Anyway, I hope it comes to this. Not just Kamala and her VP partner running circles around him, but an energized, network of surrogates swarming the Trump campaign, holding events in all regions of the country, and elevating Harris and her message when they appear with her on stage.
Ha! Funny enough, I don't even live in Ferndale. I live close to it but in a suburb that's always been a tad pricey. Dave Coulter has been great and the one thing he doesn't have that L. Brooks Patterson had was a hatred of Detroit. Or a love of sprawl. I'll say this though: gun to my head, if I had to choose between the old country club GOP guy L. Brooks Patterson or Donald Trump to run things, I'll chose L. Brooks Patterson every time. He had a lot of flaws (Being a massive racist for one) but he isn't going to be rambling about Hannibal Lecter or water pressure.
Tweet apologies but that was one of the things I liked about Biden. Man was the poorest Senator and all that and he may have Omega and Rolex watches, but still cared. Also says a lot that he walked with UAW strikers. The thing that gives us pause with Harris is that she and Emhoff live in a stratosphere of wealth so beyond the pale, that at a certain point you lose the ability to be a normal person. Don't get us wrong, Joe does well for himself. But he's still on this planet. -OS https://t.co/ptDnnQfZm3— Lyndon Baines Johnson (@lyndonbajohnson) July 26, 2024
I would agree about Biden's appeal in this area. Regarding Harris, no she doesn't come from Biden's type of background, but to a great extent she embodies that American Dream we like to pontificate about. Her immigrant parents came here because they thought doing so would afford them a shot at a better life. And it did. The contrast with Trump remains striking, of course. There's wealth that one's earned. And there's wealth you were born into.

This has to be the drumbeat of the Kamala campaign. Trump got us all primed for a referendum on an old guy, well, now he's the old guy. This is one sweet irony.

DJT admits if he wins there will never be another election. If that doesn’t move you to do everything within your power to get Kamala Harris I don’t know what will. This would not be good for White Christians or anyone else. There will not be a country lo live in anymore.— Armand Hamouth (@AreMond2) July 27, 2024
https://abcnews.go.com/538/8-potential-kamala-harris-vp-picks-bring-table/story?id=112280594 He's won statewide election in Arizona twice, which is a plus. He's got the highest favorability across-the-board, but only the 3rd-highest favorability among dems. He also ranks 3rd among those shortlisted for veep in terms of name recognition. So, the numbers say mostly-positive things about him, but him having won AZ twice is key, in my view.
As a senator with a state on the southern border, I think he can heavily diffuse the upcoming GOP topic points that as the border czar, Harris has been a failure,
The fact that the Press have let the GOP get away with sabotaging the border deal Biden put out is something I hope Harris and Kelly can shine a light on.
