I read that a little while ago. Interesting to see Cannon back in France. #9. Lens: 8 wins, 7 draws, 6 losses; ......22 goals for, 19 against French League Table Lens is 4 points away from the #5 spot and the #14th spot. Lots of leeway. Interesting that there are only 3 other teams with better goals against average. On the other hand, there are 12 other teams that have better goals for average. So you wonder why they are putting a keeper on trial.
Info on Lens Lens needs a new keeper because their previous starter, Guillaume Warmuz, a ten-year club veteran, had a mental breakdown after a series of horrible performances (particularly in Champions -League and UEFA Cup action). He voluntarily left the club and is currently in self-imposed exile from soccer. Back-up Itandje is not really considered starter material. This would be a great opportunity for Cannon, IMHO. Lens has arguably the best fans in the French League and are habitual European cups participants. The club also has a great reputation of positive internal atmosphere. I would love to finally have an American in a high profile position in Le Championnat (Regis and Vanney were never really stars).
Wow, sounds like a good opportunity for Cannon. Regis is crap. I wouldn't want him to be thought of when you think "American Football". I don't think Vanney has been given a decent chance to succeed at Bastia. From the reports, his play has been solid, but they brought that kid in from Liverpool. Of course you want to push your players, but give some a chance first!
I read on RC Lens web site (I did as best I could as it's in Franch) that if they get Cannon or anyone else it would only be until the end of the season (La Championet) as their back up now, Sébastien Chabbert, has a shoulder injury and needs sugury. Not sure when their season ends, probably in May, but maybe he can get a McBride kind of deal and just go until our season starts. I just don't want to loose him permentally. Conway is decent enuff, but Cannon is better IMO. I don't know as it would be better for him for his future and for training to possibly be the 1st choice goalie of the USMNT and to go to Germany '06 as he would face better competition there, but I think the Quakes need him, so I'm hoping he'll stay. I wish we could get an American over there (that's not a keeper) to imprees. It's to bad John O'Brien at Ajax never gets the credit he deserves, but that another story all together.
Cannon keeps a shutout in his run out with Lens reserves. He played 2 thirds (don't ask me, they're French): http://iis2.domicile.fr/rclens_domicile/actualite_flashs.htm Tha reserve team coach was "satisfied" (satisfait) with Cannon, but did not feel that he had gotten to really see Cannon work.
Gosh, is this.."all against the quakes" day? Was I not told because my feelings (mostly hate..kinda) for certain players can re-emerge so i start whinning too. TRANSFORM MARI
Could be a done deal - french translation help It sounds like Cannon got the contract offer: http://www.lequipe.com/Football/20030124_184015_01.html My French verb tenses suck, but here is a rough and tumble translation: "Lens has offered to be signed a six month contract to American goalkeeper Joe Cannon, from the trial of a few days. His arrival should compensate for the departure of Guillaume Warmuz and the unavailability of Sebastien Chabbert ([out with a] shoulder operation)." Someone with more skill at French, please double check my translation.
Re: Could be a done deal - french translation help Never mind, its a done deal: http://iis2.domicile.fr/rclens_domicile/actualite_flashs.htm Cannon under contract with Lens until June 30.
