    Mitchell Announces Youth Roster

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Men’s Youth (U-20) Head Coach Dale Mitchell has named his 22-player roster for Canada’s pre-tournament training camp in Antalya, Turkey from November 15-19. Mitchell will name his final roster for Canada’s second consecutive FIFA World Youth Championship on November 20th following a match against Turkey on November 19th in Ataturk-Antalya Stadium in Antalya. The 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship will be held in the United Arab Emirates from November 27th to December 19, 2003.

Following the final roster selection, Canada will travel to Dubai, UAE on November 21st for their final preparations.

Atiba Hutchinson, Alim Karim, Winston Marshall, and Sita-Taty Matondo will join the touth team following the Olympic qualifying series against El Salvador on November 15 and 19.

In the first stage, Canada will face Australia, Brazil, and the Czech Republic in Group C. Canada will begin the competition against Brazil on November 28th, continue on December 1st against Australia, and play their final game of the first stage against the Czech Republic on December 4th.

Second stage play will begin on December 12th with a group of 16 teams; the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship final will take place on December 19th in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

"Our boys are very excited about finally getting the opportunity to play in the World Youth Championships,” said Mitchell. “It has been over a year since qualification and we need to come together as a team like we did then. Given the group we have been drawn into and the quality of players we will be facing, getting results will take three very good games on our part and that bit of luck you sometimes need."

Canada secured their spot after a 3-2 victory over the United States in Charleston, S.C. in November 2002 with two goals by Iain Hume and a single by Chris Lemire.

The tournament was originally scheduled to begin last March but was postponed due to the threat of war in the Persian Gulf region.

I am surprised to see a few of the young faces on the team.

Hopefully Sportsnet will be covering the Canadian games...

    Don't know

I think FSW carried a lot of games in the US last time round. But I seem to recall they were shown 'very' tape delayed (i.e., days later).

    U20 WC --- Canada vs Brazil Nov 28th [R]

Unfortunately none of the U20 WC games will be shown in Canada this time around.

I know the Canada-Brazil game will be shown on Eurosport GB and DSF in Germany. I suppose it wasn't worthwhile for Sportsnet to pick up the broadcast?

I just hope we have a better showing then the 2001 WC!

That Nilmar kid on Brazil is supposed to be a Chelsea target...who isn't really...but apparently they will buy him and then loan him to a russian team for a year until he can get a passport

Canada got some help today from the other teams at the WYC, which means Canada has advanced to the second round. They will play Burkina Faso on Monday. Burkina Faso will be a tricky team from Canada to play. It would be dangerous to underestimate them.

Since Burkina Faso topped their group I doubt Canada will underestimate them - hopefully the other way round.. On the other hand, Canada has apparently improved with each match, so if the trend continues.......

    Congratulations to Canada for advancing.

Definitely progress and, yet another sign that playing you guys in Olympic qualifying won't be the push over some of my countrymen think it will be.

(Not that beating us at both the U23 and U20 levels wasn't a good sign as well!)

Best of luck against Burkina Faso.

BTW, how many of these players in the UAE will have a prominent role in Olympic qualifying?

Thanks for the good sentiments. As for how many of these players will play a prominent role in Olympic qualifying, its difficult to say but I'd say at least 4 will be on the squad, at least 2 as starters. They are Hume, Hutchinson, Matondo (described by a FIFA game report as "looking like a slim DaMarcus Beasely" - I kid you not :) ) and the keeper Karim (though he may be the back-up for the Olympic matches).

That is, if they are available - Hume & Hutchinson are European-based players & the Olympic qualifiers are not on FIFA dates, so they might not be available (Hume missed the previous qualifiers against El Salvador for this reason, and Hutchinson is being shopped around to bigger clubs by his Swedish team that just got demoted from the Swedish Premiere League, so he might be anywhere come Feb).

Actually, one of the starting defenders at this tourney, Winston Marshall, started against ES, so perhaps that should be 5 players.

The big two, though, are Hume & Hutchinson. If we are missing these players in Feb., along with De Guzman & Klukowski (who's clubs only released for one of the 2 matches against ES) our task will be a lot tougher. But with a full squad we should be tough to beat.
