This is gonna truly suck! The 2003 season appears it could be tainted by multiple call-ups. The end of the season standing could be drastically affected by players who are MIA from their respective teams.

according to the very informed Elaine:

The Canucks come through again. Now if Sharolta can play caution free this weekend we should/could/maybe have her and Hoop and Marigol in Beat kits for the match with Beergut and Co.

This just shows, again, that when brains and common sense were allocated to North American soccer the US failed to remain in line long enough to get any and Canada got all of them, except for the minuscule amount allocated to Mexico.

It is unheard of for a National side, in N. America, to take women’s club duties into account when scheduling and even more unheard of to change a date to make it easier on the clubs and players.

Of course I could be giving too much credit to the National Assns. It could be, and may very well have been, that the clubs were going to withhold players if this change was not made. I am fairly sure that all the Canadians, most of the Americans, and even the Mexicans have fulfilled there required number of appearances for their National sides and therefore do not have to be released for anything except WWC games and qualifiers.

While National team duty is an honor and very important for both the WUSA and women’s soccer in general club lay is also important and the WUSA needs its stars at the WUSA games as much as possible to keep the fans coming at least at the level that they are. Missing a number of stars could hurt the league a lot.

It would not be a surprise to see other games that conflict with club games have clubs withholding players.

Remember that the clubs pay the players salary and they carry insurance for players even when the are on National duty.

Some other players may benefit by teams doing this as players that normally do not get a chance may get a final chance to impress.

I don't know whom to blame, but this is very poor planning, and it looks like the Beat will suffer more than most other clubs.

Unclear what you're saying. Blame for what? Poor planning on who's part? How will the Beat suffer?

Poor scheudling on international games, or at least failure to coordinate with WUSA. The Beat suffers because we have more top players on internaional teams than any other WUSA team- 3 US, 2 Canada, I Mexico, 1 Germany, 1 Japan. Note that ALL of these are starters for us ordinarily.

Maribel vs Nonen. Canada will have the better supporting side.

while that's a valid argument...i must say that the CSA has done far and beyond to accomdate WUSA schedules. the game vs. brasil will technically the first game of "importance" that players might miss their WUSA games. all other games have been on weekdays and such, and i think players like hoops and shar missing one wusa game for team canada is "fair"...they haven't missed any games up to then.

    just my two cents.

    National Team Duty:
    Maribel Dominguez – Mexico, (June 30 – July 12)
    Homare Sawa – Japan, (June 30 – July 12)
Kylie Bivens – USWNT, (July 8-11)
Cindy Parlow – USWNT, (July 10-13)
Briana Scurry – USWNT, (July 10-13)

I have changed my thinking, if Stone will let Kylie go to Nat training camp, without the shot of making the final roster (and missing a midweek match). Then he would most likely release the Canadians right after the Wed. match so that they can play with their Nat. team on Thursday and Sunday, (missing a Saturday's match). - At least in my mind, that is the precedent he is setting. Its a WWC year so these friendlies are a necessary evil, and we have to accept them as fans. The team has to accept them and step up their effort to fill the voids.

Elaine, if you would so kindly keep us updated with Canadian Soccer news it is very appreciated.

i have it on very good authority that both hooper and nonen have been called in for our upcoming series vs. brasil (although, it's not a no-brainer, lol) on the 17th/20th...what i do not know however, is if they will be travelling to their Beat game in between both games like they did in 2001...

i think there's a separate thread about this on this board....

a blurb from a CP article about the brasil-canada games:
i'm not too surprised about this...as it seems like shar's hammie has been wrapped heavily the past few games...

I agree. I think it definitely affected her against the Courage on the 4th.

    canada - brasil

    hey beat fans...

you get your wish...as canucks won't be missing beat games...

    http://canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=1334

hooper will join the team on the 20th, in time for the ottawa game...thus will be missing the first game of the series.

nonen is not even on the roster for the game, as a previous CP article made mention she had a hamstiring injury...the fact that she played AFTER the article was released against the spirit indicates that maybe her hammie isn't as bad as it appears? and that she'll be resting?

i personally will be upset to see nonen play on the 19th and not travel with hoops to ottawa to play on the 20th...

but overall, i'm kinda sad to not see nonen at all! :(

    oh well...blech lol

    Re: canada - brasil

I suppose if the Beat were to play Boston during the midweek and Philly on Sat. that might have changed that decision. But since Atlanta is battling Boston for first the result in that game could mean a 6 pt swing either way. Charmaine is amazing!

Her injury hasn't even been listed on any injury reports. But her leg has been (up until the match vs. SD) heavily wrapped. I think the Beat are doing the right thing by not allowing her to play with both teams, however, I do feel for the Canadians - its never an issue when April calls up players.

    Re: Re: canada - brasil

also, keep in mind that ottawa is charmaine's hometown...so that another reason of the "importance" of her being at that game.
my sentiments exactly. the CSA can't wield a heavy stick like US Soccer can...so i'm sorta bitter about this. but as long as shar remains healthy, that's the number one priority...only "bright side" i see in this is that i'll get a chance to see her in SJ when i'm out in CA after these canada-brasil games. looking forward to that very much now since shar won't be in canada. (AB1FAN...:( lol)

Thanks Elaine, this has been useful info. Let's root vigorously for BOTH the CNT and the Beat... they shouldn't have to compete.

i made this post at the Go Big Red!! forums...

    good idea by the CSA...

ottawa's hoops hometown, plus she's the first player to reach 100 caps too...

goes to show how many games we play compared to the USWNT, as christie pearce of the USWNT, who started playing with the USWNT in 1998 just recently got her 100th cap. hoops started almost a decade before pearcie did, and they both are reaching 100 caps at about the same time.

lilly, foudy and hamm all have 200+ caps too...but nonetheless, a great achievement for hoops!

Hooper's a class act. A lot of folks on the WUSA boartds dis her because she plays hard, but to me that just good soccer. Everyone I've spoken to who's met her feels she also a really nice person. a well-deserved honor!
