Canada fell 1 spot to 95th in the January 2018 FIFA Rankings. El Salvador knocked Canada out of the Top 10 in CONCACAF. @Polygong Can you sticky this topic and unsticky the "CMNT Friendlies Thread 2016/2017" topic? The USA Men forum has each year with its own schedule topic.
Cavallini scored a couple hours ago for Puebla 2-0 over Veracruz. We need to play more games, hard to build a FIFA ranking when you're playing less games than teams ahead of you.
Unless you win all your games and the teams ahead of you lose all theirs? If Canada plays twice this year and wins both matches and El Salvador plays 8 times and loses them all....would we still be lower ranked than El Salvador?
El Salvador has 382.77 points. If you devalue their 2015 through 2017 points, remove their 2014 points, and they get no points in 2018, they will finish with 172.05 points. Doing the same thing for Canada produces 190.17 points, so if El Salvador doesn't get any points they will finish the year behind Canada. I used the December 2017 FIFA Rankings rather than the current ones so every game would be one year older in December 2018. Its impossible to know how many points Canada will get from matches without knowing the opponents. The confederation weighting could change after the World Cup.
I don't know what that has to do with the ridiculous statement that I responded to....(that Canada can't catch the people ahead of them if they don't play as many games as them)...obviously it is not just the number of games but the quality of opponents and (most importantly) the results that will determine how far up (or down) Canada moves in the FIFA rankings. I also don't know another place that is so focused on these rankings as Canada.
You asked what would happen if Canada played two games this year and won both and El Salvador played eight games and lost all of them. I said that if El Salvador loses every game, Canada will pass them regardless of who Canada plays and how Canada does. I was responding to that question and not a general point about how important it is to play. It could help Canada if the Copa Centroamericana ends and Gold Cup qualifying is done by the Nations League. It has been posted that Canada is at a disadvantage compared to UNCAF and CFU teams because Canada doesn't play Gold Cup qualifiers. Since World Cup 2014, Canada has played 16 competitive games that count in the FIFA Rankings: 10 WCQs (2 in Round 2, 2 in Round 3, and 6 in Round 4) 3 in Gold Cup 2015 3 in Gold Cup 2017 (excluding non-FIFA member French Guiana) During that time, El Salvador has played 26 competitive games that count in the FIFA Rankings, which is 62.5% more than Canada: 10 WCQs (2 in Round 2, 2 in Round 3, and 6 in Round 4) 4 in Copa Centroamericana 2014 5 in Copa Centroamericana 2017 3 in Gold Cup 2015 4 in Gold Cup 2017
I think it goes without saying sports is a results business. Why is my concern over how little they play "ridiculous"? To me this scenario you create is nonsensical and has no basis in reality. The simple fact is if you play less games you are at more of a disadvantage in terms of collecting points.
Rankings are important for every national team because they create pots for World Cup qualifying, among other things.
It is not ridiculous to be concerned about number of games......it is ridiculous to suggest that a team that plays fewer games can’t catch/pass a team that plays more in the FIFA rankings.

Junior Hoilett renaissance continues, he'll probably find his way to Premier League next year one way or another but hopefully with Cardiff
Canada is up 6 spots to 89th in the February 2018 FIFA Rankings, which is their best ranking since they were 87th in March 2016. They're tied with El Salvador for tenth in CONCACAF. El Salvador has more points when you use exact values, but FIFA rounds to the nearest whole number and has El Salvador and Canada in 89th. Canada was 85th in February 2016 and has not been better than 85th since they were 83rd in June 2013. FIFA says that neither El Salvador nor Canada plays before the March 2018 rankings, and El Salvador will gain 2 points to move ahead of Canada, who will remain with 388.

yes a very good hiring indeed....when you take a risky move in the top job (as I think they have) it is always handy to have a plan B.
