Yallop Announces Roster for Friendly vs Spain

    http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=2297

Ottawa, Ontario - Canadian Men’s National Team head coach Frank Yallop today named his 18-player roster for the upcoming international friendly against Spain on Saturday, September 3. The game will be played in Santander with a 9:45 p.m. kickoff (local time).

"This is another big game for us," said Yallop. "You want to measure yourself against the top teams in the World and obviously Spain are a soccer power. It will be good to get together again so soon after the Gold Cup and to have a few days to prepare for what will be a real challenge for us but one we are eagerly looking forward to."

Yallop continues to use friendlies as an opportunity to see different players and the Spain game is no exception with midfielder Rocco Placentino earning his first senior call-up. A member of Canada’s last Olympic team, Placentino moved in the off-season from Italian Serie C side Cavese to Serie B’s Arezzo, who subsequently sent him on loan to Gualdo in Serie C.

Yallop has also recalled goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos from Swedish side FC Boden. He will be joined by goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar, who played for Canada at the FIFA World Youth Championships in Holland in June.

Defender Marco Reda returns to the squad for the first time since the Portugal game in March, as does striker Tomasz Radzinski and defender Mike Klukowski. Midfielder Julian de Guzman, who moved to Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna from Germany’s Hannover 96 in the off-season, has also been selected.

Several members of Yallop’s 2005 Gold Cup squad will also be involved - they include striker Ali Gerba, who was transferred from the Montreal Impact to Swedish side Sundsvall; Impact defender Adam Braz, captain Kevin McKenna who returned to German Bundesliga side Energie Cottbus in the summer; Tromso midfielder Patrice Bernier, Helsingborg’s Atiba Hutchinson, San Jose Earthquakes striker Dwayne de Rosario, Millwall’s Adrian Serioux and Josh Simpson and Ipswich midfielder Jaime Peters who made his debut earlier this season.

Defender/midfielder Ante Jazic, who has been sidelined with a number of injuries since World Cup Qualifying last year, is fit again and has also been selected from Russian side FC Kuban.

The squad will gather in Madrid on Monday, August 29 and practice at the Spanish Federation training facility before flying to Santander on September 1.

Re: Canada to play Spain (Sep 3rd) and Luxembourg (Nov 16)

Here's the roster for the Spain match. A few surprises - couple of new players getting looked at (including in goal, where I don't think either keeper has played a full 90 minutes for the senior team before - Wagenaar's only 20) a few of the "vets" missing from the Gold Cup are back (Jazic, Reda, Klukowski, De Guzman & Radzinski), but a few players are noticeable by their absence - Brennan, Hirshfeld, Sutton, Nsaliwa and Stalteri.

Have to say I'm a little disappointed. Just when we are starting to get some familiarity and depth we have changes at the back again. Where are Greg and Lars? Interesting to see Braz. He's probably there as cover and hopefully will have some people see him.

Wonder if Larry is injured? Also I thought Reda and Grande weren't getting much playing time (not sure though) Fernandes must not be on the radar at all to call the other two goalies.

    Jimmy B off the radar?

I think with Brennan its just a case of the coach wanting to give Placentino a look as the left mid, which is fine, Jimmy just played in the Gold Cup. If Rocco doesn't work out we can play Simpson in that position with Jazic & Klukowski able to play left back (actually I'm surprised all three LB have been called) or De Ro, or even De Guzman. We know what Jimmy will bring, and I don't think he's as key of an ommission as Stalteri is, as he's one of our three premiere players (De Guzman & Radz being the other two, with De Vos not really playing internationally these days and injured in any case). I hope the ommission of Stalteri is through Paul asking for a break or his club getting antsy about getting called up so soon after return to injury, because taking A-league defender Braz over a starting right back for a currently in first-place EPL club doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and its not like Yallop needs to see Braz in action to know what he brings to the table.

Oh, and I think Sutton is injured. What the deal is with Lars I'm not sure - he's starting regularly now in Norway's top flight so he would seem ideal for selection.

Actually I don't have a problem with this lineup except for the unfamiliar goalie/defender situation. I think the FYE is doing a good job blending the new guys into the lineup. I don't think there is anything untoward about Larry and what you said about Brennan makes sense. I doubt if Braz will see any action but good to have him there for experience/exposure.

Speaking of which I thought Hainault was headed for Crystal P.

Well I figure without Stalteri Braz will start at right back, unless Atiba's thrown there. I'm eager to see what an Atiba/De Guzman combo in central midfield could do. People have been raving about Atiba in central midfield in Sweden, and his own club expects that they will lose him to a bigger European team sooner or later. Time to let these guys run the midfield.

Also, I have to figure that if you are going to call Radz, Stalteri should get called as well (particularly as Paul is about 4 years younger).

Didn't realize so many guys would be left out. Here's the list (that I can remember)

    Regulars
Stalteri, Brennan, Hirschfeld, Sutton (injured?), Hume, Occean, Imhof, possibly Bircham

    Guys to look at
    Friend, Nsaliwa, Fernandes, Ademolu

Hope we see some of the above at Luxembourg, but I bet it will be much the same lineup. Could be a scary time in the back third in Spain.

I'm actually excited to see Stamatopoulos in goal. I will go out on a limb and assume that he will be starting.

Great chance for him to show Yallop what he is worth, against a top team like Spain.

"He's not starting regularily for his club" was a convenient excuse for Yallop when talking about Brennan, Hirschfeld and others in the past.
The same criteria was never applied to Peters at all of course or Simpson or any other of his odd choices for WCQ.
Some very odd choices, but typical of Yallop who seems to have either have no clue as to who is at what level or more likely has lost the confidence of many of our sure starters.

Perhaps Lars turned down the invitation because he is getting more time with his club, and his contract is only 6-months? Lars might have turned it down because he wanted more time to impress the coach at his club?

Who knows, it is all speculation until we actually hear from Yallop about his selections. Hopefully we get a story (and a few quotes) from Neil Davidson.

It's a weekend off for all the top European leagues isn't it? Norway is in action that same day anyway. I would daresay that Lars would impress his coach by playing well against Spain more than attending an optional workout the weekend of Sept 3rd.

Actually I am all for giving Kenny S. a start. If he gets injured that week, it could get interesting.

Too bad it isn't live, but I will take the 5-day delay. It is better then not being able to see the game at all.

If Canada loses to Luxembourg, it will be time for Yallop to go as continues to look for players and is not creating a stable team for the future.

I think the FYE is right on the money, there is method in his madness. For the most part all of our playing pool has been seeing time with the club. We have what, two years before we will play a game in anger. This is the time to experiment, blood new players. The stability is creeping in by being able to produce lineups with guys who might not be our regular starters but they have 15 games experience instead of one (goalkeeping situation aside). The more stable lineup will come as we get closer to the next WCQ.

If there are injuries or suspensions we now have guys with some experience to provide cover, that wasn't there before.

As for losing the confidence of his players there is no evidence of that at all. Quite the contrary if you go by the words and actions of DeVos, De Guzman, Stalteri and Radz.

The only real mystery is the Dan Fernandes situation.

For the game against Luxembourg FY has hinted about calling Rob Friend and Stephen Ademolu, now is the time to get these guys back on the radar. Tam and Dan as well.
