Elaine has posted on gobigred that Canada won the first game 4-0. Following two 4-0 games against England it would seem the Canadians like that score.

4-0 is a very good result against Mexico. Will be interesting to see what happens in game 2 when Canada is without their WUSA players.

    game report

    hey-

the CSA released their game report right here ...

goals scored by sincy, latham, allen and an OG all in the 2nd half.

    our lineup:
interesting to see coach pellerud shuffle the player around ... next game will have a totally different lineup as all the WUSA players will be gone (except karina, although i think he'd play another goalie...)

also, four players got yellow carded: booth, timko, neil and chapman ... hhhmm??

wished they had the mexican lineup as well. i want to see who played for them.

    off to class now! lol

Interesting subs. Can see Pellerud working to deepen the roster with playing time for the less experienced players. Might not win the next game but I think the lack of WUSA players fits Pellerud's agenda perfectly. It's all about preparing his team for the WWC.

the mexican roster for the game wasn't released, but according to the players called in, i would bet it was molina who played in goal for them.

    hey-

after some detective work (lol) ... i found out some more info about the first game (albeit, i know, late ... but better than nada! lol)

ok...here's what i got: (in no specific order)
    • the weather in sinola is super super hot...you know...dripping sweat type hot, and the team is staying in this beautiful hotel near the ocean. (wished i was there ...) lol
    • team is looking to kick some butt in their 2nd game! go team! lol
    • first half of this game was pretty bad, as the team couldn't string anything together.
    • 2nd half a totally different story than the first.
    • the lights actually went out 5 minutes into the 2nd half, and the game was stopped for about 20 mins to get the lights turned BACK ON before play resumed.
    • after the little interruption, canada "brought it on" and scored some very pretty goals.
    that's pretty much it ...

it'll be interesting to see how the team does tomorrow w/o some of their key players.

    Canada Defeats Mexico 2-1

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team defeated Mexico 2-1 in front of 2,123 on Sunday in an international friendly in Mazatlan, Mexico while preparing for the 2003 Women’s World Cup.

Mexico opened the scoring in the seventh minute and kept the lead until the 54th minute when Christine Sinclair tied the game. Sinclair has now tied Silvana Burtini as Canada’s second highest goal scorer with a total of 38 goals with the Women’s World Cup team.

Oakville, Ontario native Diana Matheson scored the game winner and her first international goal in the 90th minute.

“We won the game more because of a strong desire than a great performance,” said head coach Even Pellerud. “Disastrous playing conditions made great play impossible, but we compensated by a better fitness level and some great individual performances. Diana Matheson was one good example; she earned the match winner when she was pushed higher in the last part of the game.”

Canada’s next series is against Brazil on Thursday, July 17 at Molson Stadium in Montreal and Sunday, July 20th at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa.
