Especially as so many other teams got draws so the total number of points out there isn't as high as it might have been. Panama have to be feeling pretty happy right now while Jamaica must feel stunned. Our next window is away to Mexico and Jamaica and then home to Panama. Any points from Mexico would be strictly bonus. Beating Jamaica away is suddenly looking more possible and, of course, we'll be looking to win at home. Four points should be our minimum goal for this window and six would be super.

After a tremendous draw in Mexico, a much less tremendous draw in Jamaica. Cup half full is that we took a point on the road and did it despite a long, long list of missing players. We remain undefeated in this qualifying campaign. Cup half empty is we once again failed to take three points. Tonight's game against Panama is now certainly a six-point, must win affair. I'm disappointed that so many of our attacking players are still missing. I was really hoping that Larin, at least, would be back, especially since David hasn't yet managed to hit his stride in this round of qualifying. I think getting Laryea and Buchanan back will be huge. The sheer disruptive speed those two bring to the game keeps our opponents from settling in to their preferred patterns and plans. It frees up time and space for Davies and our central midfielders to do what they do best. I'm hoping that that, plus 30 000 screaming fans, puts us back in the win column for this match.

William Shatner may have been the Canadian who went to space this week but Alphonso Davies was the one who discovered warp speed. Man, what a run! That wasn't a game of two halves but it was a game of two parts. Great to see us once again come back from an early goal and also great to see us not let up and really put the beat down on an opponent. What we need now is to figure out how to play that way for the whole 90 minutes, rather than starting slowly and having to come back in the first place. It would be much more difficult against a team like Mexico. Overall, however, I'm very happy to see us in the top three - and looking like we belong there - after the first two sets of games.

The first two sets of qualifying games are behind us and we're almost half way through the process, having played 6 of 14 games. It has been suggested that we will need about 23 points to lock down the third qualifying spot. That's 1.64 ppg. So far we are at 10 points from 6 games or 1.67 ppg. As I wrote previously, a tidy way to get to 23 is to win all our home games that aren't against Mexico or the US, beat two teams away (I had suggested El Salvador and Panama), and pick up two extra draws some where. Life is never that tidy, but let's see where we are at: Three home games (Panama, El Salvador, Honduras): 7 of 9 points Three away games (Mexico, US, Jamaica): 3 of 9 points The points at Mexico and the US would certainly be the "pick up two draws somewhere". We still need to win two away games in which case the away draw against Jamaica offsets one of the dropped points at home. If we'd managed to beat Honduras at home at Jamaica away, we'd be sitting pretty. As it is, I'm quite happy with where we are at and how we are playing.
You might not need 23 points to qualify. In my prediction contest in the Concacaf forum, all eight people predicted fourth to have 22 or fewer, and that was before there were so many draws. If you get 3 more wins, 3 more draws, and 2 more losses, you'll finish with 22. If you win hosting Costa Rica, you'll be 7 points above them with 7 games left. If you have a bad month like a draw hosting Costa Rica and a loss hosting Mexico, you'll have to worry during the break of over two months until Matchdays 9 through 11. If you have those two outcomes, Panama gets at leats 4 points, and Costa Rica wins hosting Honduras, you'll be fourth, and 1 point above fifth, or above fifth on goal differential if El Salvador vs. Jamaica has a winner and that team wins their next game. Panama has an easy November by going to Honduras and hosting El Salvador, but their last six games include trips to Mexico, USA, and Costa Rica.
