I caught the highlights, and having played at a level where technical ability actually matters, I can say confidently this is the most skilled Canadian team we’ve had—by far. The difference is obvious. Canada has finally moved away from producing mostly athletes and started producing actual footballers with real technical ability. Better touch, better movement, and better composure on the ball. I think the main reason for this is that some or most of these players were developed outside of Canada. A few World Cups ago I was on this forum saying teams like El Salvador and Honduras would beat Canada, and people laughed. I was right. Most people here massively overrated Canada because they don’t understand the technical side of the game. That said, there’s still one thing I can’t stand seeing. Players throwing their arms up because they didn’t get the pass during an attacking chance. That is amateur-level behavior. It’s mentally weak and highly performative. It feels less about helping the team and more about publicly signaling, “I was open and I would’ve scored.” That’s easy to do when you never actually had to receive the ball, settle it under pressure, and finish. Elite players don’t waste energy performing frustration or assigning blame in real time. They reset immediately and focus on the next action. That mentality needs to be coached out if Canada wants to reach the next level.
