well well well, it seems that only convey is up for the challenge of playing marco's position. he needs more experience. can we get marco to take some free kicks, and corners....he cant do worse than today cough, cough..stoich cough...... at least we have a bit ofvision from the mid when he is in there. this team will go absolutely nowhere w/out him. I'm notsayng we wll win the cup with him, but at least i wont sleep trough games.
Marco hasn't played like Marco since 1999. He should've retired three years ago. And now you want him back
you'll have to find him a new position, because Convey just proved he should be our playmaker oh wait, seems you'll get your wish as Convey will be gone when Diablo returns
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE.....WE NEED MARCO! There are only two (three counting goalie Rimando) D.C. United Players worth their salt this year... Number one is Bobbie Convey and Number two is Marco Etcheverry. The rest of the gang, Hristo, Stewart, et al., just are not trying.. heck, Stewart can't shoot and he even fouls players in box resulting in a Dallas score yesterday! As far as Hristo is concerned; Coach Hudson only puts him in last 10 minutes of game and he has yet to do anything this season. When Marco's health improves he needs to get in to help Convey or DCU is doomed! Nobody else on team is even trying! Sorry... that much is very apparent! IntheNet
nothing will change. He still has no right foot, and - unlike Valderamma - he hasn't shown an ability to play well after having lost about 3 steps. Time to wake up and smell the basement. Put Marco's name on the ring of fame in RFK and find someone else. Even Sonny Jurgensen's time ran out.
[Michael Corleone] He's been suffering from the same torn miniscus since 1989. [/Michael Corleone] Marco Etcheverry: The Hyman Roth of MLS.
IMHO, Convey should be the central attacking midfielder. I find it odd that you should choose this time to suggest that Etch was missed. Clearly Nelsen was missed, and one could say that our history of strong forwards have been missed, but the lone bright spot was Convey's play in central midfield. Etch is over-max salary. Convey is less than a third of that. To me, the choice is obvious. Etch can still do good things on the field when we must face a set-defense, but when Etch is on the field we rarely push the attack quickly through midfield and we do not generate the chances we did against Dallas. Thus, we do not score many goals. No one is suggesting that Etch is needed for his defense. Convey--in less time--has shown that he has at least the scoring impact that the current Etch has. Frankly, with Convey and Stewart away, Etch will be needed. But it's not because he's better than Convey, it's because Convey's USMNT commitments prevent him from being with DC United. I think Stewart could ably cover for Convey when Convey has Youth Nat's duty. What we need are forwards. -Digital
So one dribbling exhibition, one shot in the run of play and one pK makes Marco "worth his salt" this season. Man I wish you were one of my teachers in school.
Let me premise this by noting that I haven't been happy with Etch since 1999, that I think MLS has outpaced his game and that last season should have been his last season. All that said, I've been thinking about Hudson's quote from earlier in the year that ""This team is built around Marco Etcheverry, and as it is constituted now, it will succeed or fail depending on how he plays. He simply has to return to the level he enjoyed several seasons ago. He must make big plays every game. The ball must move through him. He has to be the man." But there were also suggestions that Etcheverry didn't have forever to prove himself, that there would be a moment of reckoning if things didn't go well. It occurs to me that the Confederations Cup has really hamstrung that moment of reckoning. I think it would be difficult for Hudson not to play Convey in the center next week were he still with the team. Convey made the big plays last week. He was the man and the team basically did rise and fall on his play alone. If Convey were back on the wing next week then I suspect that most people would question his judgment. But, of course, he's with the nats on his way to France. So Etcheverry is going to get another reprieve. He's got the team from the time he recovers from surgery to the time that Convey gets back - and maybe even past then. That is the question: if Convey has a successful run in France then does he come back with as much claim to the center spot as he had upon leaving?
Bobby recliams the center if Marco does not learn to stop holding up the attack and starts making some vertical passes down the wings, like those we saw in the second half in Dallas.
