Well, the subject line says it all... it didn't seem like a "fair" red to me. Can TFC appeal it and win? Cheers!
blah, blah, blah... go have another red bull... i love hopw the rest of the league is sooooo damn jealous of us! hahaha
Jealous of you becuase we don't think your going to win an appeal for a player who TRIED TO BITE ANOTHER PLAYER? Heh. Yah right.
Laws of the Game Rule 12 Sending-Off Offences A player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following eight offences: 1. is guilty of serious foul play 2. is guilty of violent conduct 3.spits at an opponent or any other person 4. eats or attempts to eat any portion of the body of another player or official 5. denies an opponent a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by 6. deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area) 7. denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick 8. uses offensive, insulting or abusive language receives a second caution in the same match
The answer to the question is---no. The League can suspend the fine that goes with the red card but he must sit out the next match. The League can and often does suspend a player when a Ref misses and horrid foul but they never call back a Red Card. CONGRATULATIONS on your first goals and win.
Can they appeal the card?...absolutely. Will they win?...no chance whatsoever. I mean the guy tried to bite someone, I'd be more worried about him getting suspended more then one game (which I actually think will happen) then trying to get the card revoked. You guys looked fine without him anyway so it wouldn't be a huge loss.
Is there anywhere we can see the attempted bite? I could not see it on the MLS highlights. In fact it is clear you could call him for a foul on the keeper, but it is not even a yellow, you see those nine times a match. After that all I see is the Pickens reaction which has to be at least yellow, and if Dichio had wanted it could have been red. But he was noble. The other red is absurd. I say yellow on Dichio, perhaps, and sure yellow on Pickens. That is it. Unless someone can point out the bit attempt to me.
As per the bite, I PVR'd the game and from one field-level angle, if you watch closely when they are scrumming in the net when Dichio and Pickens were brow-to-brow you can see Brown has his hands in the vicinity of their faces trying to break them up and it's actually quite clear that Dichio tries to bite his fingers. As per the game, wow, what an atmosphere that must have been, and a very entertaining game... and the CBC coverage of soccer sure puts Sportsnet to shame.
kevin, totally rite here CBC have done fantastic job covering TFC , weve Score doing the next game doubt they be any better than CBC . Two thumbs up for CBC.
Here is downloadable video of the attempted bite. http://www.mediafire.com/?4nzyyknzyui I've tried to youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiqY-cdZKk4 ) it, but the quality makes it too blurry to really tell.
I suppose they can try, but I don't think they'd succeed. Not sure what the red was for, but I expect that cards are only successfully appealed if they can show that the Ref misidentified the player. Actually Chicago might have a better case for an appeal. I didn't think the red to their player was deserved at all. Even the "takedown" of Dichio by Gutirrez seemed to me to be more of an attempt to separate the two players & prevent a fight - not something that should be carded IMO, certainly not with a red. The Chicago Keeper, on the other hand, could have picked up at least two straight reds for his actions, if such a thing was possible. He deserved a red for the viscious kick to Dichio that started the whole thing (which CBC's replay cameras didn't really show too well but we got a good look at it at the game), and then another for his antics after that.
This is the correct answer. After watching the replays, I don't honestly know why they would. Congrats on your first win!
http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070512.wsptorontofc0512/GSStory/GlobeSports/home This post-game article contains a few quotes on the incident & confirms that even Dichio thought the sending off of Gutirrez was un-justified. Though he doesn't say that about the non-sending off of Slim Pickens.
While I'll confess I don't have much if any experience trying it, actually trying to bite someone in the face seems like something of difficult task, especially without tilting ones head... other than getting the tip of someones nose you really can't bite anything and inflict any damage, especially when the guy can see it coming.... fingers on the other hand (pardon the pun) would be a relatively easy target. Other than as a threat, trying to bite someone in the face is something of a futile pursuit. To inflict any kind of damage you need it to be protruding, the nose is about the only target. Take another look, Browns fingers are right up there in their faces, and you can see Dichio go right towards them.
I hear Saigon whores excel in this tactic. It should have been Pickens that received the red card instead of Gutierrez.
haha Well then, I guess we have to set him free. Oh yeah, Mike Tyson should have that strike against him for biting Evander removed from his reputation. Or are the rules about biting/eating/chewing in boxing worded differently?
I think the point to be learned is that if you stick your hand in someone's mouth, you might suffer some sort of consesquence. B
sort of like sticking something into an electrical socket. not a smart thing to do. maybe dichio needed a snack after scoring that goal!
Pickens kicking out was nearly just as bad as Dichio supposedly biting or attempting to bite. I mean in the 1998 world cup Beckham got sent of for more or less the same only his kick was just a tap. So in my view of it all id Dichio desrves to be sent off so does Pickens.
the ref got it wrong, but that was only because he sent off gutierrez instead of pickens dichio deserved the red and may face a multi-game suspension. biting isn't taken lightly i would imagine. btw, great game ya'll. i cannot wait until dc visits. it should be fun, and i hope the barra brava and screaming eagles travel in numbers.
It was quite the spectacle.I was there and it was a shock that the keeper did not have even a caution after the dust had settled. A few points that I think have not been made. First on the initial challenge Andrew Boyens comes flying in and collides with the back of Dichio. So the strength of Dichio's challenge was perhaps more than expected by both himself and Pickens. Second the Fire players should have followed the basic rule of pull at or tackle your own player to get him away from a melee. When Brown reaches out first for Dichio's head (it appeared too slippery to grab properly) and then gets his hand into Dichio's face, what was he thinking? Dichio was leaning in and talking at the time. His stance was closer to delivering a head butt than a bite (not that either is acceptable), but if the energy had been directed towards getting your angry team mate away from the opponent's angry team mate - we would not be speculating on who meant to do what...
