Will LA Galaxy complete the domestic treble?

They have the Supporter's Shield. Now can they win both the MLS Cup and the US Open Cup? It would be a pretty impressive feat.

Change the question from can to will. B/c of course the Galaxy CAN complete the treble, the more important question is WILL they.

Yes. I think they're is a good chance they will. I definately think they'll snag the Open Cup again. They're luck sucks in the MLS Cup though. I'll pull for them unless the they play the Revs in the final cuz I want the Revs to win after all the bad luck and since they're at home.

i.e. never be Champions! I wish MLS called it the MLS Championship so there would be no confusion on this matter. MLS Cup = Champion. The other things are all well and good, but Galaxy are losers, unlike my Championship team, the Wizards! The Wizards have a better shot and two championships than LA at winning this year. Why? Igor. The name alone will send shivers down the spines of our enemies.

    As a Burn fan.....

All I know is we probably don't want to play LA anytime soon in the playoffs. They, along with the Revs, are the hottest teams in MLS.

Ruiz is bad news for any defense and Cobi has picked up his game.

    In answer..

I think they can do it and wouldn't be surprised if the Galaxy set playoff attendance records while working their way to New England. Hmmm the Revs vs. LA final. Would be a good one, but I'm still hopeful the Burn will add their two cents.

For the Open Cup, they will be able to because they will have some time to rest before the Open Cup final--if they do win the MLS Cup.

    In the meantime..

    GO BURN!!!!!

    I'd bet against it.

For the Open Cup Final, they'll be in a one-off road game against a team that will probably want it more than they do (after failing to get the 2 seed, the USOC is probably the Crew's season). That's a 50/50 proposition at best.

For the MLS Cup Final, we've seen LA smoke the regular season and fail in the playoffs before. Wouldn't shock many if they did it again. And they're not by far superior to the field-- if you look at the whole season, San Jose was very close to LA's quality, and if you look to the moment, NE is probably hotter (and now has home field through the Cup Final). That's also a 50/50 at best.

So, while they have a shot, I figure their chance at the treble is 25% at most.

Who has new England beaten to be on such a hot streak? In the last 10 games they've gone 6-3-1 while splitting with Chicago and Colorado, beating DC twice, beating, the Metrostars and Burn once, tied the crew, and losing to LA. Three of those win are against DC and NY who didn't make the playoffs. They didn't play SJ in the last 10 games and LA only once. They are certainly playing better then half of the teams in the playoffs but the class od the playoffs is still SJ and LA. I'm not sold on them beating Dallas and Colorado in a playoff series.

That's not really how 'hot streak' is defined, is it?

That's very interesting, but 10 games is a pretty arbitrary number, and mostly obscures what they've done recently. In the last 6 games, they're 5-0-1. In the last 8, they're 6-1-1.

It's probably needless at this point to mention that the losses occurred before the hot streak. They were, by subtraction, 1-3-0 in the four games before the last six (and 0-2-0 before the last 8). Is there not a difference there? They won at DC, Chicago, Dallas, and drew at Columbus. The lone loss in the period was at the Supporters Shield winner.

Most teams just do not get that kind of consistency (NE is one of only two teams to win 3 consecutive games all year).

LA is on quite a streak themselves (they are the other of the two). But if it's unimpressive to win at Dallas, is it less impressive to lose there, as LA did during its current run? (It's the last time either team has lost). I guess that's a matter of interpretation.

But I do think it's pretty safe to say NE is pretty hot right now (while LA might be a pretty legitimate debate, it's patently obvious against anyone else). And if NE plays LA in the playoffs, it'll have to be in the Final, which will of course be at New England. (In the game that they played at LA, it took LA 86 minutes to pull out the game. That doesn't necessarily prove anything concerning what it would look like in NE, but then it certainly doesn't prove what it wouldn't look like).

Yeah but thats how we do it in LA, we've scored i think 20 or so of our goals after the 75th minute.

I'm a Chicago fan, so you can imagine how much it hurts me to say that the Galaxy are good enough to accomplish the treble.

LA were the first team to beat the Hex, and kept right on going, becoming the only team to win four straight. They are also the only team to beat SJ at Spartan Stadium this year. They have the player with the most goals and the likely defender of the year. And Jones has hit a remarkable stride this season.

They will start the playoffs against KC, which should cause them no worries. Then they'll face either Dallas or Colorado, each of whom they're .500 against. So I'd say they have a good shot at getting to Gillette next month. Once there, as long as they're not playing the Fire, I'm rooting for them to win. Whoever it is, though, that team will either be SJ or will have had to get past them. So the MLS Cup final promises to be a great game.

Now as for the Open Cup, LA averages 1.21 goals on the road, which is exactly what Colombus averages at home. They're 1 and 1 against each other in league play this year, each scoring four. That one is wide open, too.

Someone above suggested a 50/50 shot at each cup. I'm astonished at how precisely the 2002 stats corroborate this prediction!

Only 4/12 teams in MLS history have earned a championship. If the Wizards are trash, then the Galaxy are something that can't be uttered on Bigsoccer.
