Mauro Germano is getting the papers to become italian citizen. No surprise here,but he should have already reached an agreement with Trapattoni and F.I.G.C that he will be called up for the Italian National Team. He's eligible,since he's never been capped for Argentina mixed feelings here: he's certainly not a product of italian football,but on the other side i'm ecstatic at cheering for him in azzurro too!
He will be AWESOME and a great addition for the Azzurri. He's been wonderful this season for Juve and it will transfer to the National Team.
How sad that Italy must resort to this (if it is indeed true). It really smacks of desperation. I mean, even the US has gotten away from this sort of tactic by now. But more than anything, I think this is a result of the high amount of foreigners playing in the Serie A currently. Young Italian players simply aren't getting the opportunities to break into their own league.
Well, his NAME is definitely Italian so he's gotta have the heritage. Personally, I don't think it's that bad of a thing. Other countries call up players that are really from former colonies. Just because Italy sucked at colonization, does that mean they should be at a disadvantge Can you imagine a day when some late-blooming Italian-American kid ends up playing for Italy. It'd be great and sick all at the same time.
It would be pathetic if they should use some citizens just living in italian soil (something we did in El Salvador with two brazilians 5 years ago!), I dont have anything against people raised in a different location since his relatives have some heritage, i mean c'mon Poland nationalized (sp?) a nigerian citizen just because he married a polish!
I am not questioning his elligibility to play for Italy. I am just pointing out that somthing has gone horribly wrong when the home of (arguably) the world's greatest league must look at foreign players to help their national team.

I dont see the problem with him getting an Italian passport to play for the national team. The real problem is why do the The Azzurri have to look to other countries to supply there national team players. i mean its not like there arnt enough decent italian players out there. Another problem i have is why the refuse to play a Stefano Fiore who is easily one of the best italian players in Serie A at the minute and want to go out and get some imigrant to play for the team.
I think he'll add more creativity to the Blue, especially to the flanks, and it will ease the pressure in the middle for Totti to do what Totti does.
What a ridiculous sentiment amongst some of you, that its somehow a sign of how desperate Italia are that they would use a player who wasn't born on their soil. PLEASE. Get over yourselves (Scotty, I'm looking at you). Countries all over the world use players from outside their borders, furthermore, if a player goes through the process to become a citizen of a certain country he has every right to play for that country, and none should criticize the player or the country for doing so. The case of Olidasebe and Poland is completely different. Camoranesi has been in Italy for years now, has Italian heritage and never played for Argentina. Christian Vieri was raised in Australia, does that mean he shouldn't be able to play for Italy?
I remeber seeign Camoranesi play when he was with Cruz Azul in the Mexican Football League. It is also one of the reasons why he wasnt cap tied. If he had stayed in Argentina then to market him he would have received a least a few caps to raise his stock and sell him abroad. So you can thank the MFL for Mauro

I'm going to have to agree with Jawz on this one, look at Holland and France. Imagine what they'd be like if they didn't tap into their colonial players. It's not like Camoranesi isn't Italian either, he's got the heritage unlike others who play for Holland or France. Camoranesi is more Italian than Kluivert, Seedorf, Winter et al. are Dutch. LOTS of NT's do it, especially European ones. I think it's good for the Italian NT and don't have a problem with it.
What the hell is the problem? He is obviously Italian, look at his name (many Argentinians are), he has an Italian passport and hasnt played for anyone yet. Same situation as Vieri, and numerous others around the world. I have two passports, one being Italian, and if i was good enough, I could chose who I wanted to represent. My family is Italian, I have had an Italian passport since birth, but I have grown up Australian/In Australia, but I have lived in Italy. I cant see why anyone would worry if I picked one over the other. Forza Camoranesi !! LOL

A traitor to who?? It's not like Argentina picked him to play for them. What about players like Liverani and Ferrari, they have parents who aren't Italian yet they're considered Italian. What makes a person Italian? Am I not Italian because I was born in the US even though my parents were born and raised in Italy and I carry an Italian passport. Hell I'm more Italian than some Italians in Italy. Camoranesi already has dual nationality and for the past three weeks he's been doing his compulsory military service in Rome.

Anyway I think there are better choices in his role (ie Zambrotta) What lacks are midfielders. We have the best defensive line, no attacking line is better than ours. Our midfield is weak (at a world level). We need some new Albertini.
I've got to agree with Dante on this, 1) Argentina never called him up and never looked like they would, they have a nuber of skilled wingers where as the only true wing player for the azzurri is Zambrotta. 2) Who gives a fig whether or not he was born in Italy or raised in Italy or whatever your point is, would France have in 98 with out Vieira, Henry, Thuram, Desailly, etc., Davids is one of Hollands best ever and he is half Surinamese! One other thing though is what Sardinia brought up, the great defensive middles are coming out few and far between. The Albertini's, Redondo's, Dunga's, and that other dutch are becoming few and far between. Now we are getting guys like Gerrard who is as iffy as a striker, guys like Tommasi who have a mind for it but just aren't all that talented, and guys like Gattuso who are just nasty SOB's but don't have the skill of their predecesors! For the Totti, Del Piero and the rest of them to work you have to have a reliable defensive middle who will back them up, who can controll the attack and pace of the game, and who will keep his team into the game even whent they are down by three with ten minutes left on the clock! Back when Trap was doing the qualifying for the WC and everyone thought he was the saviour of Italian football he had one thing that he didn't have in Korea/Japan. That was Albertini, if everyone remembers in the Juve-Milan game right before the Cup both Albertini and Pessotto went down and suddenly Trap is left with Di Biagio (good but not solid) to take his place and quite frankly he just didn't do it! The good news is that Pirlo is developing into a pretty solid player, whether or not he can become the next Albertini remains to be seen but at there is some hope!!!

at www.soccerage.com I read that he already made the decision of who he's gonna play for, but won't make it public just yet. It's also said on that website that it's speculated that he could've chosen Argentina. To me, a week ago, it seemed more than certain that he was gona play for Italy, as even Trap wants him.
You think Kluivert, Seedorf and Aron Winter are not Dutch boys like many? Sure, they've got a nice tan and they are Surinamese and will always have a connection with Surinam... but it's not like they're first spoken words weren't Dutch... More to the point... we have never tapped into colonial players. Each and every one of them lived here before playing football. Many of them were born here. This has nothing to do with changing someone's nationality or going over there looking for some players... They are Dutch, grew up in Holland or were born here... what are you talking about? This has NOTHING to do with the practices that this thread is about.
