Yep. CCV can't be blamed there. Even if the keeper called for the ball, he knows that the defender won't always hear him, so he has to be sure he can grab and hold onto the ball regardless. If he's not sure, he has to punch it clear. CCV was essentially static, so it was for the GK to make the decision and execute.
Some ratings from the QPR game: - Carter Vickers 6/10 - Not sure in his communication on the goal but he looked shaky to start the game. He twice failed to clear his lines and they nearly got in. He seems to head it down a lot rather than out. He was better 2nd half and at least started to win things. Not the best with the ball and they pressured him and meant he went long a lot. - Have to say I misjudged the goal. Obviously Carter Vickers was right next to Blackman and made inadvertent contact. Still a really bad mistake by the keeper but he could do that again if he tried! Highlights from the game. Obviously in that first goal, but sloppy giveaway at midfield by CCV led to a dangerous QPR break.
Keep an eye out here, Toby Alderweireld just injured his hamstring, and as Paul Pogba will tell you, that can take months to overcome. Not much worse of a muscle injury for a soccer player. Spurs have Vertongen, Davinson Sanchez, and young Juan Foyth, while CCV has a recall clause for January.
Would be terrible for CCV. That said considering that Alderweireld went down like 20 minutes into the game and immediately came off means that's a pretty serious injury.
Agree. He wouldn't go back there to start, but to be 4th choice. He's in a much, much better place right now.
I don't know anything about a recall clause in his contract. Does the EPL still have such a thing for preseason loans? Everything I read said it was a season long loan.
It’s not an EPL thing. It’s just either in the deal or not. In this case, I have no idea if it is nor have I looked. But they could have very well negotiated that.
50-50 IMO. Dier can play CB at least as well as CDM and Vertongen is proven at this level, while Sanchez has made 13 appearances in the EPL, the CL and CL qualification this season. With Wanyama due back in the next ten days, that gives them - just - enough players to juggle CB and CDM until Xmas. I doubt they'll turn to Foyth this season - he's only 19 and has only an half-dozen Argentine D1 games to his name. He'll probably play in some of the domestic cup games in order to rest the others but, 13 million or no, it's a big leap in standard and a very different style of football for him to be playing in the EPL. IMO it all hangs on how back Alderwiereld's injury is. If they see him coming back in February, CCV will surely be left at Sheffield. If not, and especially if any of the others are showing signs of fatigue, they may recall him.
As for leaving him in Sheffield, that's all to the good for his development IMO. They're a pretty big club, with an intensely devoted fanbase, so he's already learning to deal with big-game pressures. But the real X-Factor is Chris Wilder, the manager. Over the last two-and-a-bit seasons, he has won two division titles at clubs that were not exactly promotion favourites - Northampton nearly went out of business, and he was the fifth manager in six years to try dragging Sheffield United out of League One. for no English coach one has enjoyed such consistent success. He's managed 107 league games in that period, during which his teams have gathered 229 points. No other coach in England comes close. He's a winner, and it'd be good to see that rubbing off on Cameron
