with an expiring contract in Summer 2018, this isn't promising news. http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...ttaeuschte-sie-wollten-unbedingt-bleiben.html
From google translate Streich's Disappointed: "They absolutely wanted to stay" Since now only Florian Niederlechner is on SC Freiburg's injured list, the battle for places in the squad is huge. Even before the away game at Hertha BSC (Saturday, LIVE! From 15.30 clock) Christian Streich will again tell some players that they will not compete for a place in the journey to the capital. There are a few players at the club like Caleb Stanko, Vincent Sierro, Bartosz Kapustka and Karim Guedé, who will not play in the second half of the season, and some like Marco Terrazzino, Marc Oliver Kempf, Lukas Kübler and Tim Kleindienst belong in the starting eleven but then either sit on the bench or are not in the squad. This situation was already foreseeable in the winter break, explained Streich, and therefore discussions with several players were held in January. "However, they absolutely wanted to stay because they believe that they will continue to learn something here," says the SC coach. He told them that depressing weeks could come to them. Time to get the hell out of Dodge
things are getting worse for him now https://www.scfreiburg.com/news/abrashi-und-stanko-fallen-lange-aus Stanko has suffered a serious knee injury in trainning and is out and seems like he needs surgery as well.
Welp. I don't know what type of meniscus injury he has but I hope its more on the minor side so he can make back before the end of the season.

So bizarre. He has been there 7 years (18-25) has a smattering of first team appearances and is still kept around by the club. Kinda weird situation.

he's good depth for the team...not a star but good enough to fill-in if needed....I dont see any reason for them to not keep him around..... i dont buy the narrative that most clubs seem to ascribe to (i think mostly motivated by the chance at transfer fees) that players dont improve after early 20's and must therefore either be established or nothing by that age. to me, it's weirder how most clubs keep a player around in the reserves all the way through their first contract even though they know they have no plans for that player....basically guaranteeing that player will have a very hard time ever becoming anything as a player....kinda spiteful. For example, I think what dortmund did with junior flores is more bizarre than what freiburg is with stanko....or what west ham did with lletget etc.....etc
Players can kinda do it to themselves, too. They won't take a buyout and sometimes push back against a loan, thinking they need to stay and fight. They learn they won't make equivalent in the leagues where they would play. It's how players get stuck in places where they won't play much (barring a slew of injuries).
I didn't say he had that mentality. Just a general problem with how players end up stuck with a team.
