Caleb Stanko has joined SC Freiburg and will play with the club's U19 team

It's part of a cooperation Freiburg has with Vardar Soccer club in Michigan

Yet another University of Michigan recruit lost to the pros.

Both Stanko and Sean Cunningham had verballed to Ann Arbor. And, of course, the Wolverines appear to have lost Soony Saad to (so far unsuccessful) European dreams after one season.

Pretty much sums up the changing landscape of American soccer development.

Freiburg is sort of a club that tries to develop youngsters because of their very thin (I am talking LeAnn Rimes here) budgets.

Great stuff. Thanks for the interview.

So that's three 93's playing in Germany that prefer central midfield (Huerzeler, Renken). And we've also got Packwood playing central midfield at Birmingham. I'd say this group may have some potential...

Hurzeler is playing more left midfield and forward these days. Central midfield is pretty much his third position now

    Love this bit...

Stanko would be honored to represent his country but he insists the U-20's are not on his mind at the moment.

"Of course it would be nice to play with U20s but it is definitely not a priority to me," Stanko concluded. "I am mostly concerned with my development and progression within Freiburg."

This kid gets it. The YNT is a byrpoduct of the club, not the other way around. The club is the first priority - it pays the bills.

Well he is on the U20/U23 camp roster. Good for him.

Caleb Stanko just qualified for the German Cup Final with SC Freiburg's U19 over the weekend. In Freiburg's 3-1 (2OT) win against Hamburger SV Stanko had an assist on the first goal and played the entire 120 minutes. The final will be played in Berlin on May 12th against Hertha BSC Berlin (live stream of the game will be available at www.dfb.de).
Stanko's play over the last few months has been outstanding and is one of the key players of SC Freiburg's U19 which is considered one of the best at that age group.

Stanko appeared on the bench for Freiburg II on 3/4, which was the first time he made the 18 for the reserve team. Sounds like he had other things to do this past weekend.

And he made his debut for Freiburg II on Wednesday as a late sub.

Yes. All Bundesliga clubs have reserve teams in the 4th division except for Bremen and Stuttgart (3rd) and Augsburg (6th).

Stanko has a long way to go, but this is one of those minor-but-positive little signs. I like seeing players move up ahead of schedule. Not that a 1993 getting a little Regionalliga time this season means that he's blowing the doors off, or anything, but it's progress.

So he's not going to be better than Mario Gotze? :(

Caleb Stanko has found his stride at Freiburg. The officials at the club love him and think he could be first team material very soon. Freiburg's Reserve Coach is planning with Caleb as his right back for next season which is the position the club wants him to focus on from here on out.

Thanks for this. Mind if I ask where it came from, not to doubt you or anything.

SC Freiburg just sent some coaches to Detroit last week to visit their partner club Vardar SC (where Caleb used to play) and run some practices. That's where it came from.

Caleb Stanko played a full 90 for Freiburg's U19 team in a 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin in the Finals of the U19 German Cup.

Nice first season for Caleb in Germany.

Surely they can't see him as a long term CB at 5'11 (according to US Soccer).

    But hey, Cannavaro was 5'9".

Hey, he could add anther inch or two, but i don't think that 5'11 is that tiny to be a CB.
