The history of Club Sport Emelec was born out of an Empresa Electrica del Ecuador (Electric Company of Ecuador) assembly which was convened by George Capwell on April 28, 1929. Capwell was a North American, he came to Guayaquil as an executive of the Electric Company. He founded one of the most popular entities of the country. This man founded the club with the spirit of creating a baseball and boxing institution, since at that time these were the only two sports which were played. Soccer began to enter in this Club with the realization of the tournament Sudamericano de Futbol de 1947, where the greatest players of the times participated like Di Stefano, Pedernera, Rossi among others. Emelec has a rich history with some important conquests such as having been the first national champion in 1957, with the dream team that was comprised of Yu Lee, Jose Balseca, Cruz Avila, Mariano Larraz, Carlos Raffo, Jaime Ubilla, Daniel Pinto, Romulo Gomez, Suarez-Rizzo under the baton of Eduardo "Tano" Spandre. The Club has reached the championships in 1961, 1965, 1972, 1979,1988, (in 1989 we were robbed on the table), 1993-1994 and 2001-2002. It's ironic that the team that did not play the best soccer, is the historic team of 1995, which reached the semifinals, losing by a very little difference to the Gremio de Porto Alegre. The Brazilians were the champions of America. Emelec is characterized by being the first team to accomplish many things. It was the first national soccer champion and the first to have its own soccer stadium. It was the first to place a player, Ivan Kaviedes, in Calcio Italiano. The highest scoring Ecuadorean player, Ivan Kaviedes, was also rewarded the highest scoring player in the world. He also holds the record for scoring in the history of Ecuadorean Soccer Championships. The first Ecuadorean club that had a score from the Copa de Libertadores de America, recognized on an internal level by the speakers of the Confederacion Sudamericana de Futbol but, which has yet to be published, Enrique Raymondi "El Maestrito". It should be said that Alberto Spencer was the highest scoring player in this tournament but, he was playing for Penarol of Uruguay.
George Capwell was the man behind the construction of the stadium which carries his name. Beyond all this, George Capwell founded Emelec The efforts to construct the Capwell Stadium began in 1942, when George Capwell presented a solicitude to the Municipality of Guayaquil requesting the donation of a parcel of land that would be designated as an athletic field destined to be a baseball field. At the time, it was a tough battle for the founder of Club Sport Emelec. He had to convince the councilmen of the time that his idea would have a positive effect on the citizens of Guayaquil. He acquired the property on the streets of Quito and San Martin and in order to construct the stadium the first donation came on behalf of the Italian Consul. Afterwards other donations would arrive. A prevailing role in this task was played by Enrique Baquerizo Valenzuela, the father of the actual speaker of Club Sport Emelec, David Baquerizo Viteri. Between outs, at bats and homeruns the first baseball games were held along with various tournaments of the same sport. In 1947 the destiny of Capwell was changed, it was draped in the attire for soccer, since Ecuador was the host of the "Sudamericano de Futbol" tournament. In December of 1947 when Capwell Stadium was inaugurated as a soccer stadium. Guests of honor such as Di Stefano, Pedernera, Lostau, Labruna, Gambetta, Sacco, Mendez, Moreno, Pontoni among other stars from this era were in attendance. After this Sudamericano, the stadium would be used for playing soccer. As the years went by, the old stadium deteriorated and was used for practice by the primary team. On July 25, 1989, the president of the soccer commission Nassib Nehme, thought of expanding the stadium and proceedes to place the first stone. After perfecting the idea and receiving the blessing of the Board, presided by the now deceased Johnny Fellman Ackerman, Nassib Nehme began the construction which was concluded on July 21, 1991. The expansion left Capwell with the capacity of 19,000 spectators. Various professionals were involved in this expansion, specifically Luis Valero Brando, an engineer, and Ricardo Mortola Di Puglia, an arquitect. The construction company, Constructora Cluba S.A., was also presided by Nassib Nehme. To inaugurate this stadium a tournament was organized. The Cuadrangular International hosted the following teams: Santos de Brasil, Independiente de Argentina and Universitario de Peru. The host team, Club Sport Emelec, won the tournament. As the years went by, the growing blue fans needed another expansion of the Capwell Stadium. That is why the President of the Soccer Commission, Omar Quintana Baquerizo, along with important support of the directors who love the team, such as the president Enrique Ponce Luque, Leonardo Escobar engineer, and Institutions such as the Banco de Tungurahua, la Corporacion Financiera Nacional (C.F.N.) and the Constructora Kengar made the first stage of this expansion which goes up to Juan Pio Montufar street. Five civil engineers, 12 supervisors, 25 carpenters and 108 assistants worked on this construction. Capwell is the first construction in Guayaquil which used sand and river rocks. The other components were: 19,000 sacks of cement, 7,500,000 pounds of steel, 3,000 tons of sand, 2,800 tons of rocks and 60,000 blocks of cement. This task was completed in time to play the Copa de Libertadores de America of 1999. The first phase of the expansion allowed for 4,500 additional spectators. This was broken down as follows: 34 suites with their respective 17 parking spaces, 1,521 box seats and 2,500 preferential seats. The second phase will accomodate 25,000 spectators. The third phase will suit 18,000. The idea is to reach 45,000 this year. This objective is quite credible since the leaders who support this change have fulfilled all their campaign promises.
Thanks for the information and the photos. Here in Colorado, the Rapids are moving out of a 76,000-seat american football stadium (where the Denver Broncos play) into a stadium that seats 20,000. This sounds backwards, but it should help the team. Gracias, Huguito.
I think is always better to have your own stuff our stadium is actually for 20.000 but this year it will be enhanced to receive 40.000 "emeleXistas" (C.S. Emelec supporters)
Goleada Monumental Emelec no era favorito. No parecía tener chance a ganar, no estaba en los planes de muchos. Pero esto es fútbol y por fútbol y goles fue superior a Barcelona y lo derrotó para ponerse cerca de los Play Off. Goleada Monumental es el título de esta nota. Y no solo lo es por el sentido estrictamente literal que implica que fue goleada (por sobre los tres goles de diferencia) y monumental por el nombre del estadio en que se jugó, sino porque esta victoria de visitante de 3-0 de Emelec frente a Barcelona, la tarde y noche del domingo 20 de octubre de 2019, debe ser, y no es exageración, una de las más importantes en la historia de los Clásicos del Astillero.
A horas de arrancar la semifinal, vamos por esa remontada, con toda la fe Emelec de mi vida. Y si perdemos, tenemos que hacerlo por un gol y anotando de visita. Si es por mas de un gol y no anotamos estamos afuera" Perdimos 2-0 y nada, pienso que se puede darlo vuelta. Emelec jugo los 90' mejor dicho los 180' En el Capwell peleo contra un equipo metido atras, estrategico puede ser, pero que nunca le jugo de tu a tu Emelec lo dio todo aun con sus limitaciones Gana el partido2x0 Nadie le regala nada y pierde en penales. La verdad dejaron todo. Jugar un partido con dos goles abajo, estadio lleno, hasta el minuto 87' el marcador seguía igual, la gente seguía ahí y cantaba.. Nunca abandonaron, terminaron los penales y aplaudieron a los jugadores por la entrega. Emelec tiene la Mejor hinchada de Ecuador. Esto es contradictorio, deberíamos star muy tristes x no haber clasificado a la final. Pero al contrario, estamos muy orgullosos d nuestro club, nunca se dio x vencido y su gente jamás abandono. Enorme, colosal, desmesurado, sideral, gigantesco, bárbaro, q noche la del CS Emelec. Finaliza la tanda de penales, la hinchada se para, aplaude y canta hasta el final, esto queríamos que a pesar de que la plantilla no es la mejor este año la entrega nunca debe faltar. ¡NUNCA! La consolidación de la dupla de centrales es espectacular, se complementan increíblemente. La sobriedad de Leguizamon contrasta con el ímpetu de Vega. Bryan Cabezas tuvo la oportunidad solito para hacer el primer gol al primer tiempo del partido. El resultado de anoche es muy muy positivo a pesar de los penales. A la interna de CS Emelec los jugadores están tranquilos porque dejaron todo y orgullosos por el triunfo, el juego y haber demostrado que podían.
