Maybe he will be allowing gays to stay in the Lincoln log cabin for donations and votes?

    And your point, Garcia?

This was a light-hearted attempt to say that he is pandering to the gay vote.

I guess the mixed references to log cabin republicans and the Clinton era Lincoln bedroom "rental" was over your head.

I think he is actually expressing a sincere position, I don't remember him ever saying anything about not allowing civil unions. It might be the first time he said that openly, but I'm not surprised.

Nothing Bush can do would piss of his base. He could be caught hiding the fact that he has a PhD in interpreting French impressionist art and it wouldn't make a difference.

True. Bush has avoided mentioning civil unions until now for fear of not appearing strong on the gay marriage issue. But anti-gay groups have criticized Bush in the past, as his federal gay marriage ban only covered "marriage", not civil unions.

Now, Bush and Kerry essentially are at the same place on gay marriage - both are against the use of the word "marriage", but otherwise, both think the issue of same sex unions should be left up to the states.

Well he did say he was unsure when Bob Schieffer asked during the debates "Do you believe homosexuality is a choice?". Perhaps Dubya has made a choice and is coming out of the closet?

This reminds me of a great old Kids In The Hall sketch, where the award-winning actress absent-mindedly thanks Hitler.

"Karl? What is it? What's wrong?"

"You said you were in favor of gay civil unions, Mr. President."

    "I did?"

    "Yes, you did, Mr. President."

    "I don't remember saying that."

"You did, Mr. President. You said you were in favor of gay civil unions."

"Well, why would I say I was in favor of gay civil unions?"

"Hm, gee, let me think, why would you say you were in favor of gay civil unions. I DON'T KNOW!"

But Dubya thinks there should be an Amendment to the Constitution outlawing gay marriage.

I understood your reference but I didn't understand what it had to do with the topic at hand.

Pandering to voters is different from giving favors to big contributors.

But has Kerry said what he will do if states start passing laws allowing gay marriages? Don't think he formulated the position.

Kerry will not back an Amendment to the Constitution that discriminates against people.

Is either one really OK in your book?

    From the third debate:
So Kerry is against gay "marriages" and for civil unions, but believes states should make the ultimate decision.

Hey, at least 10% of y'all are that way, those guys just took the first step.

Anyway, that article is staying up on myy screen so that all the pro-family value Bush lovers in my work area get to see this flip flop. Interestingly enough they'ed rather support civil unions than give up Bush.

So we can assume that if Cheney's daughter gets civilly hitched, Mr. & Mrs. Bush will be there in full support?
