The new rules would require banks, credit card companies and other financial institutions to block all financial transactions with Internet gambling sites. Online gambling is illegal in this country. Supporters of the new requirements argue this update would allow the federal government to enforce the pre-existing ban.

    Ridiculous

The question is will this go through before Bush leaves office, and if it does, will Obama do anything about it?

As a secondary beneficiary of Indian gaming, I fully approve of this ban and invite you all to visit your local Indian casino.

Can you get rid of the 50 cent "ante" required to play roulette at the Cherokee casino outside of Tulsa?

Some of us don't have any Indian casinos near us. Also the government should not be forcing people to not be able to gamble if they don't think it is wrong. What ever happened to individual rights in the Republican Party. The only use individualism only when it suits them.

The Republicans don't think gambling is wrong. They just want you to shift from cards to derivatives.

Of course, these types of internet gaming groups are based outside the country.

I believe in voluntary self regulation for financial transactions. This is a socialist plan.

    Here is my favorite part

"Religious organizations, on the other hand, are steadfast in their support of the measure. Critics argued that Frist moved the legislation to bolster his bona fides with religious conservatives in anticipation of a potential White House bid, though he never did launch a bid."

So, deregulation is for industry, regulation is for the public, microregulation is for individuals. (like Terri Schiavo) Bill Frist is an asshole.

The law has already been passed. Frist added it as a rider onto a Port Security Bill. Because back about two-three years ago, you weren't going to vote no on a port security bill.

This is just the Treasury Department enacting regulations to enforce that particular portion of the Port Security bill.

In other words, the damage is already done. All that is left is the details.

Ultimately it is absolutely retarded that I can drive two hours to LA to play poker or any other game, that I can fly to Vegas or Atlantic City or damn near 35+ states now I think and gamble legally, that I can go to my local horse track/dog track and bet on races, that I can go play the lottery......

But if I jump online and put a bet down on the outcome of a sporting event and/or the outcome of a game of cards, the world is going to implode.

This has nothing to do with religion. This has nothing to do with morality. Otherwise there would be no dog/horse tracks and there would be no lotteries.

This has to do with lobbyists paid money to do everything in their power to keep internet gambling down because the casinos of the world didn't get in on the ground floor of internet gambling....like they should have done.

A recent lobbyist for the National Football League who now works at the White House is playing a controversial role in the Bush administration's last-minute effort to implement a ban on many forms of Internet gambling before the end of the president's term, according to congressional and administration sources.
William Wichterman, who with others at the Covington & Burling law firm earned $2.8 million lobbying for the NFL against Internet gaming and on other matters from 2004 through March, is working on the gambling restrictions in the White House Office of Public Liaison, White House spokesman Dana Perino confirmed yesterday.

Barney Frank is strongly against this bill.He has tried to get the provision in the Safe Port Act removed. Once Obama takes over I believe he will succeed

Absolutely. The Dems fought so hard against this part of the bill but somehow it snuck through. I am sure the money Frank gets from the PPA has nothing to do with his stance. Coincidence of course.

Forget that. The proper question is how much freedom has the American people missed thanks to the cow dung that pushed this ban through?

It's not out of character for Barney Frank to oppose this. No surprise of course that the other big proponent of getting rid of this ban is Ron Paul.
