I thought I would start this thread here since I knew I might get the most positive responses (if any). After watching the games this past weekend I am wondering why Busch is not rated as high as Rimando. I have seen both teams play in the past and really believe that Jon (john ...sorry) is more consistent and just not as flashy. I believe it is a good comparison since both of them lie about their height on the programs (or so i've heard). This is not a response to just this last game, but Busch had an incredible season last year as well, and I am just curious why people on these boards dont mention his name in the same breathe as Rimando. Just wanted to get the fans' opinions. Thanks for responding if you have time. Greg
Probably because until half way through the season last year, busch was simply a former A-League backup brought in to provide cover for Presthus, while Rimando has been playing, and playing well, in MLS. Give it time...
I think time, as pointed out above, is the biggest factor is Busch's absence from almost every discussion about the league's keepers. It's almost as if people don't realize he's even playing, let alone the very impressive half season turned in last year. If Busch's 2003 campaign rivals his work in 2002 I think he'll be more noticed and favorably discussed.
Not that it really matters...'cause Rimando ain't sniffing a game that matters for the US Busch won't either.
Great points on the time, but I would think that it is even more impressive on his part that he is doing so well without the experience of the others. I also was just curious to see what people thought about him even only with 1/2 a season under his belt. I will look to these boards in the future to see if you are right though. thanks again for responding. greg
I think our keeper situation is really good right now. Busch is young and is really impressing since taking a starter spot on the Crew. We also have the veteran experience with Persthus around as our backup. Granted Tom couldn't stop a cross to save his life, but he's at least somebody who's seen things and can help Busch mature. I think we're going to have an excellent year with Busch and our improved defense.
Busch had better stats last season, on a per-game average, than Rimando. Rimando played in front of, IMO, a better defense. Busch came in behind a very questionable defense and played a critical role in solidifying it. If the question is would I trade Busch for Rimando, the answer is absolutely not. I'd rather have Busch any day.
Regardless of which one you think is better, why did Rimando get more press? 1. As mentioned earlier, he's got more MLS high-lites b/c he's played longer. 2. DCU was a terrible team last year. If we accept B.A.'s position that DCU had a better defense, even then a number of those players weren't there for the duration (Pope--WC duty, card suspensions for Reyes and Williams, injury to Nelsen). My argument isn't that Columbus had a better defense, only that for the defense numbers that DCU put up (shutouts, GAA, etc.), it's real hard to point to any other player than Rimando on DCU who you could say played a good season last year for most of the season. The apparent consensus among the coaching staff and the fans would be that the defender who had the best season for DCU was Ryan Nelsen--and he was hurt and missed a lot of play b/c of NZ commitments (as did Oughton of course). 3. Actually, I thought a number of the post-season/off-season reviews I read talked about how the keepers who had the two best seasons last year were: (a) Cannon; and (b) Busch. To the extent people aren't jumping on the Busch Bandwagon and touting him as the top keeper (or one of the top 2-3) in MLS, it's b/c his competition has had a couple of years to establish a track record. And, there really are no BAD keepers in MLS--just some who are better than others. Evidently, Onstad (with SJ) is the first foreign keeper to start an MLS game in a couple of years. Doesn't mean Busch isn't good--only that almost every team has someone who has some credibility as a pretty good keeper. If Busch has a repeat of last year I suspect you'll see the kind of aclaim you think he deserves now.
My God, an intelligent, insightful post by JoeW. What's this world come to. Also for consideration is that Rimando grew up with the youth national teams, whereas Busch has never been on the radar. A youth Nat and former P-40 player is always going to get more press then a guy who payed his dues through College and the A-League. But just to throw something out there, based on what I've seen last year and the beginning of this year, I'd almoast have to say Busch is the better keeper. As far as defenses go, I don't think there is much difference in the quality of defenses of Columbus and DC. They certainly could be better and they have a lot of potential to get better. Now this is how I make that statment, Rimando showed that he is capable of making some amazing saves, but when Busch came in for the Crew he actually made the defense better. Busch made an unsolid group, solid through communication and positioning. Rimando is not there yet, he has all the tools, but he relys too much on his natural ability, then communicating to those in front of him to help him out.
^what he said rimando makes fantastic saves because when you are only 5 feet tall every save looks fantastic. busch's saves look fantastic too but he doesn't have to make as many because he organizes the D better. just my 2c
Busch is shorter and 30 lbs. lighter than Rimando. IMO, his saves are even more fantastic. Here, lets look at this comparison GAA Busch 1.09 Rimando 1.39 Winner: Busch Games played Busch 14 Rimando 28 Winner: Rimando... only because of Presthus Number of games played per shutout Busch 2.8 Rimando 4.0 Winner: Busch Shutouts in Current Season Busch 1 Rimando 0 (but he does have a 2.93 GAA!) Winner: Busch Moral of the story: Busch is better.
Yeah because stats mean nothing. They only show a trend. Like, just by looking at the stats, I much rather have Ciguere over Joseph. Oops, wrong forum.
I'd take Busch over Rimando any day. I think that Busch is much more steady and knows the position better. As already stated, he also seems to do a better job organizing the defense than Rimando. I have never really been all that impressed by Rimando. He makes tons of flashy saves but most of them seem to be the result of him being out of position or not reading the play correctly.
I'd take Thornton if he dropped a hundred pounds and learned to kick a moving ball. On second thought...no I wouldn't.
