Keep in mind that the majority of commercial DVD's will have to be put on 2 DVD-R's.

Now do DVD-Rs play on regular DVD players? I have a Panasonic 5-disc one.

i don't think so. you'll probably need one that can play dvd-Rs.

some software/burners are for DVD+R/RW, others DVD-R/RW and others yet are DVD+-R/RW

If your software can only burn DVD+R, look on the cover of the blank dvd... if it says DVD - or +-, it won't work in your burner.

well my goal of course is just to ripoff blockbuster after spending five bucks to rent a movie etc, i just meant i wouldn't be burning any home movies or anything. thanks for the suggestions, i just haven't heard much about this before. i figured like how you can copy tapes on a vhs you could copy dvds, but i guess doing that easily might be off in the future. thanks for all of the help you guys.
