The Star-Telegram and 3rd Degree have now both reported that Percy Olivares had been (will be) cut for this round of waivers. Waiver draft tomorrow... http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/4447025.htm Incidentally SJ cut former SMU standout Luchi Gonzalez and former Burn player Zak Ibsen http://www.3rddegree.net/
Good move. After Game 3 against Colorado, Percy was first out of the locker room - maybe 15 minutes after the game was over and about 20 minutes before anyone else came out. I guess he never became a real part of the team.
Teams are allowed to sign one or two discovery players every year. If they have the cap room and roster spot, it's how they get players in addition to the draft. I think we knew when he signed that Percy was a gap man. He was passable as a sub but wasn't going to start. So, end of chapter, happy trails. That should solve any issue with Ronnie becoming a full roster player, right? I thought Ronnie was a transitional, which I suspect expired this year. I'm sure someone (read 3rd Degree) knows, but I don't for sure.
Any ideas on how the Burn will fill their open SI slot? Ray Hudson is heading down to Argentina for a couple weeks to scout some of the quality players now available at (relatively) bargain basement prices. Any word if Jeffries may do the same? Or perhaps we're more apt to trade with another MLS team for our new SI?
sure I have lots of ideas... but what matter is what Jeffries will do. It wil depend greatly on if/when he resigns players out of contract.
From what MJ told me, Ronnie is a starter next season, and there's no two-ways about it. MJ mentioned that he's been getting lots of approving feedback on keeping O'brien in Red-N'-Black, so look for him to be here for awhile. oh, yeah
Man I am really upset. I thought Percy who plays without any mercy was one of the best players. I am just heartbroken. How do I redeem next years season tickets that I purchased?
Are you questioning his ability to elbow Heaps in the face and still draw a penalty for us, I don't believe you!
Well, O'brien as a full time starter works for me. That makes the first big change. A new striker, and I think they will take that to the bank.
Not trying to stir up trouble, but if the Burn are looking to add a forward, who are they looking at not having next season? I was under the impression that Cerritos was going to be back from injury next season. I'm sure Kreis will be back, and I kinda thought that Jeffries liked Rhine, so that would only leave out-of-favor Johnson. Clearly he would have good trade value. I'm sure DC United would be interested, considering the strong friendship and effective teaming Santino and Eddie have done with the U-17's and now the U-20's. Or is Jeffries looking to add a 5th forward? I know they're interested in Arturo Alvarez who can play both midfield and forward. -Tron
First of all, who is he? Second, where'd you hear it? And although 3rd Degree may disagree, I am confident that Jeffries is shopping for a forward. The reason is self-evident: not one of the current four forwards on the Burn is going to compete for top goal scorer in MLS next year. Sure, Jason could, but the probability of him scoring 15 goals is pretty good. The probability he'll score 20 is less than 50/50. The chance he'll score 25 is about 10 percent. Sorry, that's what I think. The chance that Rhine, Cerritos, OR Johnson would score 15 is small, too small. So, add it up and you can estimate that for the Burn to get 30 goals out of two starting forwards, they need a new and better forward. If he can trade someone other than these guys, I speculate he will because one or two will get injured just like last year, and the year before, and the year before. So, I'm guessing that Jeffries moves enough cap room to sign a starting forward. I have no inside information, but that's what I believe his strategy will be. He might get one from another team. There's Wolfe, Razov, Pineda Chacon, even Moreno might we worth a shot. Stewart if he is serious about coming to MLS. I'd have to look it up, but I suspect bet Joe-Max has been close to 15 goals a couple seasons. In two seasons, Eddie Johnson has not played 30 percent of either one. He's not going to be starting in April, and that says it all for me.
Thanks for the heads up. As for Arturo Alvarez he's probably most similar to Vaca, though not that similar really. Arturo played for Gelnovatch's U-18's and has played both central and wing midfielder very well. Arturo, Sergio Garcia (Utah kid playing in Argentina!) and Memo Gonzalez (the huge prospect from southern California that has interest from Bayern Munich, EPL and La Liga clubs in addition to MLS) were the 3 best youth players for the U18's and U-17's (Memo). All three showed very advanced dribbling and passing skills. All three can score. All three can play wing midfielder or forward but are best as central midfielders. Arturo Alvarez, of El Salvadorean parents, grew up close to Dallas (not sure of the community). Arturo had been on the periphery of the youth teams until Gelnovatch gave him some quality time with the U-18's and Arturo excelled. It seems his game is just now truly blossoming, and MLS is taking notice. He has a good chance of being offered a contract by MLS, but a team would have to go to bat for him, and word is that the Burn are considering doing just that. He's really more of a midfielder than a forward, but he can play up top with a target forward, like Eddie Johnson. Hope that helps. -Tron
