I have a question. Americans fans’ opinions and/or feelings about players like Balogun or Dest, and a few others, are mixed. (For those of you who don’t know, Balogun has no connection to US soccer, and Dest’s connection is minimal. Also, me citing Balogun and Dest is not meant to be a complete list. There’s Musah, and Antonee Robinson, and others.) How do you guys feel about Obed Vargas, who has minimal connection to Mexican soccer? I’m not an expert on Mexico’s Nats, so I’m sure there are other players whose connection to Mexican soccer (notice I did NOT say Mexico, as a nation or people) is minimal or, frankly, zero. And I’m curious if your feelings mirror ours.* *American fans…some don’t care at all. If they’re eligible, that’s all that matters. Me, I’m in the middle: I am “proud” of our players pretty much in proportion to their connection to US soccer. But I’m ok if Balogun wants to wear our jersey, I just don’t believe it has any connection to our soccer development system. I have no “pride.” Weah played in the Red Bull academy so he’s “ours.” Dest got a bunch of youth caps so he’s a little bit “ours.” And there are a few fans who more or less feel dirty about opportunistic players like Balogun, or Musah.
If they want to represent and play for Mexico because that’s their want then welcome a board. Kick rocks if you think this a team as a second choice.
For me it's less about where they started career or built it, for me it's about if they truly feel the love of the country and culture.
Thanks for the responses everyone. It’s different for American fans. I can think of a few reasons why. 1. Many of the players in question are the sons of American soldiers stationed in Europe. And so far, unless I’ve forgotten someone, every one of those “sons of servicemen” has had a black father, not a white one. So the discussion for us involves race and support for the troops. When a Yank expresses qualms about Dest or Fabian Johnson or Jermaine Jones, it’s inevitable that someone will reply by saying his dad served, what have YOU ever done for America?!?! So that feeling better about American right back Freeman than American right back Dest because American soccer formed Freeman, but only had a minor role for Dest, becomes some kind of anti patriotism. 2. If you guys remember Yunus Musah, he was basically an anchor baby; he was born in NYC while his pregnant mom was visiting relatives. I’ve had a pregnant wife, as have most of you. I didn’t send my wife away for several months so our children could be born somewhere else. My point is, Musah’s situation is partly about American immigration politics, which of course affects discussion. 3. Mexican soccer has a lot less to prove to the world than American soccer. So in message board and social media discussions, it’s common and easy to attack America’s rise in soccer as fueled by players who have minimal to zero connection with American soccer before their first cap.

Berterame just added two more. I don't know if he'll make it to the WC over Hormiga, but at leastt he's heating up.
God, I hope not. Would be a slap in the face to all the other players that were not able to play the liguilla because they had to report to the NT Imagine this mongoloid looking runt getting a ticket to the World Cup just because he won the league totally ignoring the fact that Charly has been beyond useless for the NT in the past 5+ years

🚨🏆 BREAKING: Pending official announcement, these are the 26 PLAYERS CALLED UP BY JAVIER AGUIRRE for the 2026 FIFA World Cup! 🤯Via @Leonlec pic.twitter.com/zUQBvRFgtn— All Fútbol MX 🇲🇽 (@AllFutbolMX) May 30, 2026 Seems like a lot of sources are reporting this will be the list. Idk how I feel about it, the exciting players give me lots of hope but including guys like Chavez and Huerta who were injured most of this year seems risky. Sucks that piojo never lost his spot. I also don’t know how romo made it considering he hasn’t been a big part of vasco’s tenure as far as I remember apart from Marcel being injured, it’s a mistake not to take him imo
I’m not a fan of Romo but he’s a player that can play various roles such as DM or CB with relative ease It’s risky to take Huerta and Chavez as they are just coming back from injury and haven’t played a lot under Vasco but they will likely just be coming off the bench. Chavez has shown to be a killer free kick taker so there’s that. I really thought Marcel would make it considering he’s been playing well and was a favorite of Vasco throughout his tenure but I guess his injury is more serious than he’s been letting on? I am just really happy that Charly isn’t going to the World Cup. That dude has shown time and again that he’s garbage with the NT
Charly losing his place has been the biggest positive vasco boot, right behind antuna. How did those guys get so many chances under so many coaches
There’s no change in his injury. If it were worse he’d have reduced mins with Toluca. He played full matches up to the end of the season
I'm guessing because of the lack of options. The rise of Mora, Vargas and Marcel (even if he didn't make it) plus the acquisitions of Brian and Fidalgo made Charly expendable.
They sent doctors Vasco said and decision was taken. You really going to trust clubs more? Especially a club that isn't full strength as they has some missing to national team
