i didn't join BS until after the US-Honduras match last fall so this season is the first season i have been on BS. although i have gone to the games since 96, being part of BS really enhanced my experience. i have gone from knowing no one in the stands to knowing many, many people at games and events. people i have stood by for years, have through BS, become friends. i have even joined the BB, because of getting to know Chico13. anyway, despite the suck results on the field, this has been my best year with DCU because of meeting folks through BS.
Robert, I was just about to post a thread similar to this one. I joined BigSoccer a little more than a year ago, and was lucky enough to get a pair of tickets to the Honduras match from GoDC. DC had always been my favorite team, but now that I started working I finally had the money to get season tickets and I decided to get them for the next year. Despite being reccomended by some people to join the SEs or the Barras, I opted not to and got my tickets in Section 132. The first game (2-0 against Chicago) was nice because they won, but my worst personal experience at a game ever. I just sat there, got yelled at for standing by some when I tried to, had noone to talk to, and coudn't even appreciate the game as it was. After the game I even thought about looking into cancelling my tickets or trying to sell them on here or something. A couple of times in the next few weeks, CHICO13 tried to get me to come to the Barra tailgate. For whatever reasons, I just kept missing it and still struggled to have fun at the games while being bored in 132. Then came the day everything turned. The doubleheader featuring the US team against Uruguay and DC against Columbus. As I was walking down to the Barra tailgate to meet up with Chico for some Saltenas (I'd reccomend them to everyone but I want more to myself in the future ) and I ran into GoDC again who was tailgaiting with some other BigSoccer people who I was then introduced to. One of these people happened to be Sachin. Long story short though, I found a new home in 120 with La Norte, even struggling through some of the bad times like the Boca game where we started out with 4 people but then finished with about 30. I finally made it down to the Barra tailgate and now go there regularly before games to hang out with all the people I've met through there. I also still have time to go see my friends that are Screaming Eagles, so really, I've got the best of all worlds. What I'm trying to say here though is, if it weren't for BigSoccer I think I definiely would've caught a lot more DC games at home on the TV than at RFK this year.
Good grief guys...both of you recently joined and one of you with over an thousand posts and the other with over two thousand...I'm still struggling to get to a thousand and have been on these boards for almost three years. So you go to games and live on your computers...and that must be about it. Well, props to you both...with fans like you, how can we lose...?
Chico, We did this in the off-season last year. We met in Dec., Jan., and Feb., for a happy hour usually at Gordon Biersch or Irish Times. Since I've got a new local with a great happy hour ($3.75 ANY drink) that runs until 8pm, I'd suggest Stetsons on 16th and Ust NW. Just a thought and it'll likely first happen in October. Great to hear from all of you that BS.com has enhanced your DC United lives. That more than anything else makes dealing with Trolls and other Jersey Denizens worth it.
I posted a rant about security harassing the Choir, and that's how I got to know Red & Black. He had my back on the issue. Great guy! I to have met so many folks here. My friends in all the supporters groups. Too many to list. And all passionate for the sport, and for United! And to my friends in the Barra, It's been great tailgating with you all this year! Thanks for taking my wife and I under your wing. Great folks, all of you!
{HulkHoganVoice} Whoahh, Bruthurr! Let me tell you, Bruthurr! {/HulkHoganVoice} Glad to share my addiction with you. I'm so glad that you and Miss Vicky and the lads have had so much fun. Too bad Seuss moved to Wilmington (though he did get to see more of Kante than we did). {HulkHoganVoice} Whoahh, Bruthurr! {/HulkHoganVoice} -G. Rex
Thanks G. Rex! {Macho Man voice} Whoahh Bruthurr! Let me tell YOU Bruthurr! {/Macho Man voice} See ya for Arsenal in the off season!!
The offseason get-togethers were great fun last year. With the too-long MLS offseason, it was good to get to see some of you folks more often than I otherwise would. I look forward to them being a regular happening this year. Mark
If it werent for BIGSOCCER, Project Mahem would have in reality not existed. I enjoyed going to the Guatemalans hotel with a fellow BS member, and finding out what floor they were staying in by pretending to be the coaches son. The wonderful memories...
