Last night during the DC-Dallas local Comcast broadcast (not the national FSW broadcast), Bruce Arena made an appearance with regular talents Rongen and Dave J., and mentioned---I think I heard this right---that there will be another pre-confederations cup friendly confirmed soon. He said something to the effect that it will be a match-up that fans will be very pleased with. Anyone know anything about this, and who the potential opponent is? The tone of his comment made me think this would be a top-notch opponent...ala Argentina, Portugal, or England... He mentioned the Mexico, Wales, and New Zealand matches, so it's not those...maybe Paraguay? But that's set for after the confed cup and before the gold cup....?
I doubt we would play Argentina twice in the same year. But I really hope its England that we are playing.
Perhaps they planned a time for Portugal to come after they cancelled for early June??? When you hear "a matchup fans will be happy with" I have to think Portugal is a frontrunner for that...
I imagine that Arena is pairing up a prospective friendly with either the Wales or New Zealand friendly to simulate a Confederations Cup schedule (only one day's rest between fixtures). With the USA playing Brazil, my money is on a friendly the likes of England, Holland (again), or Germany. Of course, I don't know what their international schedules are. I hope it's Germany, a rematch should create some sizable interest domestically.
I'm happy with previous Portugal results. A matchup this fan would be happy with would be getting another swing at Poland. Or Germany.
I think the reason Portugal didn't happen on June 8 is because they got a better offer to go to Japan that week (I think it was against Argentina - Argentina was going to face Japan as well on their trip), but those games have now been cancelled. It wouldn't shock me if Portugal went back to U.S. Soccer to try and work something out now that they're available again.
It better not be against England. I can't afford another trip anytime soon and there is no way I could miss that.
