Repped for the thread title. 4-3-3 Steffen Cannon--Zimmerman--M. Robinson--Dest Musah--------Adams-------McKennie Pulisic-----------Pepi------------Aaronson (Note: This lineup was pulled out of my butt. Actual results may vary.)
Pretty close to what I'd expect. The only change I might make is Antonee for Dest, although Dest may be more of an asset to break down El Salvador. Part of me wants to see I want Gya$i to get the start, too, but I gotta think Pepi gets the nod. I hope MMA is good to go all three matches.
And then Landon goes and ruins everything and suggests cheering for them. The game itself? They came a long way to lose. We'll bring an A-team, easily send them home with nothing and then use a B-team for Canada. Seattle and Portland fans are already crying because the game isn't there and I'm loving every bit of it.
meh, kinda like our fan base crying about the Mexico game being an hour and a half away and most not going.
Hot damn, that field looks pretty dang good. “What snow TT” ⛄️ ❄️ @USMNT #USMNT pic.twitter.com/VqciwIAj1U— Taylor Twellman (@TaylorTwellman) January 25, 2022
Steffen did not travel to Ohio (back tightness). Lineup guess: ---------------------Turner------------------ Dest----Zimmerman---MRob---ARob ----------------------Adams----------------- -------Musah-----------McKennie-------- Aaronson-------Zardes-------Pulisic
There's nothing really new, but here's a piece on how the groundskeeping crew is getting the field ready. https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...anz-field-have-prepped-for-usmnts-winter-wcqs
US soccer rented additional grow lamps for LDC and the grounds keeper said it won't look great but it's doing fine.
Columbus doesn't own the US/Mexico game. The temper tantrum that many Columbus fans made about that game really showed that many don't support the USMNT, they only support the USMNT in Columbus. And of course that the lore of dos a cero is from the games that were here but that doesn't mean that this is the only place the game can be played.
The tradition - really, more of a lucky run - was destroyed in 2016. It only mattered until the bubble burst, which it was always likely to do at some point. It probably won’t matter ever again as much as it did for those games anyway. Automatic qualification for 2026 coupled with the expansion of the tournament seems likely to kill off those hi-stakes US-Mexico WC qualifier games in future years.
It should. Some felt it was another tradition ending and a gut punch. Sure, there was entitlement and melodrama but it was a rough few years for soccer fans in Columbus. Sir, please step away from the Malort.
Of course it was a lucky run. For Columbus. Do you really think those US teams could only have beaten Mexico here? Were pixies or magic or the gods intervening? Seriously? No, during that stretch, the US beat Mexico consistently, and often by that same score (I was at one such game, in Phoenix), at other venues in the US. I never implied that the USMNT was lucky to beat Mexico. Just that we - in Columbus - were fortunate to have hosted a series of games where it happened. After a while, Crew fans started to believe their own bullshit about the legend of Dos a Cero. Except it was mostly just marketing. And then 2016 happened. If you wear your lucky socks during a hot streak, and then your team starts to lose, it’s time to consider changing those socks. For most of the years we hosted this game, there weren’t many good other options. But now there are many. Face it, our luck ran out, as lucky streaks always do, eventually. It certainly was fun while it lasted (except for that last match).
