Brooklyn Knights remain undefeated at home, beat Vermont Voltage 2-0 at Met Oval For immediate release May 31, 2003 — Maspeth, N.Y.- All the Brooklyn Knights needed to put an end to a two-game losing streak was some home cooking as the Premier Development League squad defeated rival Vermont Voltage under a torrential downpour at the Metropolitan Oval Saturday night. With the win, the Knights improve to 3-2-1 and are 3-0-1 in the friendly confines of the Met Oval. The Knights jumped ahead in the 21st minute when midfielder Chris Aliosi crossed a perfect ball to Andre Borges at the top right of the 18-yard box. Borges took a touch and then blasted the ball into the upper left hand corner of the net for his third goal in as many games. “Andre Borges has been playing really well,” Knights head coach Dan Fisher said. “He’s a class player who has given us a lot of spark up front, he’s very comfortable on the ball and he’s really gelling well with the midfielders.” The goal seemed to energize Vermont (2-2-2) as the Voltage had the better of play for the rest of the first half. But the Knights back four of Gary Sullivan, Pablo Orantes, Chris Leidner and Rob Fucci withstood Vermont’s pressure and keeper Billy Gaudette (five saves) was equal to the task. Vermont pushed its numbers up late to try and net the equalizer but the Knights defense was solid and Brooklyn actually had the better chances in the second half on some lethal counterattacks. Speedy forward Ricardo Chambers came on the pitch in the 57th minute and consistently got behind the Vermont defense. On one such occasion, he was tripped up in the box by Matthieu Savaria, who was issued a yellow card, as referee Steve Karaduzovic called for a penalty shot. Chris Wingert, a member of the U.S. Under-23 National Team, stepped to the spot and easily slotted the ball past Vermont keeper Andrew Olivieri, who wrongly dove to his left, to put Brooklyn ahead, 2-0 in the 82nd minute. Frustrations boiled over for Vermont, which dropped its second straight, two minutes into stoppage time when defender Paul Tomaro was sent off for a two-footed challenge along the touchline. The Knights look for their first road points of the year Saturday when they travel to Worcester, Mass to face the Worcester Kings at 7 p.m. Brooklyn then returns to the Oval for back-to-back home games against the South Jersey Barons (Wed., June 11 at 8 p.m.) and the defending national champion and undefeated Cape Cod Crusaders (Sun., June 15 at 5 p.m.).
