I looked forward when Stanford hosted Cal Poly SLO in the NCAAs. Flamson was supposed to be a good defender. However, Stanford's Marcie-&-Marcia show just shredded SLO early. Flamson never caught my eye. Supposed to be a rock on defense but Marcia was just shredding that defense. Marcia even had the gall to attempt a bicycle kick right in front of Flamson. LOL.

Callie Withers dominated the box on every Stanford CK. But then again, Callie Withers dominates just about everyone.

The NSCAAs had to award a Big West player with some kind of honor. Flamson was it - she was supposed to be that conference's best defender. Personally, I'd rank the central defenders as:

    1. Orlandos
    2. Deerin
    3. Worden
    4. Palmer
    5. Flamson

And I would convert Cal's Carly Fuller into a central defender, and rank Fuller over Palmer.

thanks for the report from cachundo.

Assuming no defender gets selected in the 1st round by the Charge, I'd say round 2 and 3 should be best defender available mentality.

Where would you rank Breanna Boyd (Nebraska) on this list? I'm hearing the Power are interested if Solo isn't an option at #9.

    Breanna Boyd is Canadian.

I saw her play in the NCAA tourney when Nebraska played Yale..

I'd rate her 2nd, right after Orlandos.

The question would be if Boyd can acquire NON-forign status, which is unknown to me.

Some people might even prefer Boyd over Orlandos, it's very close.

Bre would have to count as a 'foreign' player as she does not have dual-status. which is super sucks, cause personally i think she's an awesome central D who has proved time and time again at both the collegiate and int'l level how valueable she is to the team. she might go un-noticed in a game, but she's there when you need her, and does her job exceptionally well. i've only seen orlandos play a few times, and while both players are great great players, i'd prefer boyd....she's also a great organizer too, and makes smarts decisions on the field.

i'm keeping my fingers crossed that a team will pick her up. personally, i think using one of your int'l spots on Bre is far better than using them on a few int'l defenders that i've seen been "signed" by teams in the offseason...

Yeah, with Whelchel being hurt, and probably missing most of the 2003 season, I can see Sermanni using an open international slot and drafting Boyd in the second round. Depending on Gao Hong and Linda Ormen, I don't believe either will be back next year, the Power have three international slots open.

Drafting a player like Boyd and if the rumors are true about NY getting Salisbury, these two players should sure up a Power defense, which was awful last year.

Boyd and Orlandos arwe stylistically different defenders.

Boyd defended space very well, organizing other people and co-ordinating with the keeper.

If your playing zonal, then Boyd would be the choice.

Orlandos might be a better man-marker, her play against Penn State and Welsh speaks highly.

Boyd is very calm and doesn't pnaic when pressured.

I see no reason why an allocated spot couldn't be used to get her.

Latham and Boyd are both in the same boat??

Rumor has San Diego owning Latham??

    Any one own Boyd already??

My impression of Boyd after watching Satan Clara-Nebraska is that she could be better than Deerin. But because of Boyd's international status, I think Deerin & Worden will be drafted ahead of her. Not unless Boyd's signed as an international, & not drafted.

I'm hazy on the rules, but can a DISCOVERY player be a college player without USA passport eligibility, which would mean the college player would NOT be eligible for the draft??

I do NOT know the answer at all.

    Anyone with any insight??

So LAtham and Boyd only route into WUSA is via the DISCOVERY route and NOT the draft??

Well, Flamson would be good to pick but not in the first round. I would pick Boyd or Orlandos in the first round and use the trade with Boston to get Hucles.

if your thinking of iverson for hucles i would balk at it without some other considerations (the 11 maybe?) hucles is an overrated player who only plays on the NT because ape is in love with her, a la pearce and fair

personally i wouldnt want hucles actually...would rather have more picks or kemp.

The players I'd want from Boston, they wouldn't give up..

    there's 3 of them.

I'd prefer #3 draft choice, but I'd settle for #11.

This DRAFT versus DISCOVERY is too Darwinian for me..

    it keeps evolving

We don't need MELIME with our offense. We could use Sobrero or Hucles.

if the rumor is Solo gets drafted #3, then Sobrero for Iverson straight-up is a deal I'd do.

Sobrero for Iverson straight trade? Why would Boston do that?

    Hucles for Iverson? Again why?

It desn't benefit Boston because both of them are better players than Iverson. And I believe Iverson is an outstanding player.

Because Iverson is a better player than Sobrero or Hucles.

    Ask Pia whom she'd prefer.

Iverson is 1st team defender in WUSA.

Just because she isn't a national level player doesn't mean she's NOT better than Hucles or Sobrero.

    We don't want Hucles anyway.

    Sobrero yes.

And by the way, I don't believe Fair is a national team player anyway.

After seeing the Charge the past two season, by view is Iverson is an exellent central defender.

    Just ask Birgit Prinz.

She's not a better defender than Sobrero. She's outstanding, but not at that level

I'll bet she'd say Doris Fitschen

But according to that logic, Homare Sawa is a better midfielder than Maren Meinert, since Sawa was first team and meinert was second team despite outscoring her in both goals and assists.

Actually, that's exactly what it means.

    Agreed

Is this the same Prinz who won the Founders Cup this year? But you are right - Iverson is an excellent central defender and the key part of the best defending team in the league.

A complete listing of players eligible for the draft will available on WUSA.com on Friday, January 31, 12:00 noon (ET)

I tried a google search to see if the WUSA foreign/Discovery rules/processes were documented anywhere on the web, but no luck there. Seems odd that I couldn't find a media report or knowledgeable discussion somewhere. One would expect at minimum the WUSA site would have something on the basic rules.

Lot's of interest in the league right now for quality defenders. I'm speculating that Boyd's name will show up on the draft list and that she'll be drafted.

Someone might get a list of teams with allocations available.

Assuming New York wants a defender at 9, I wouldn't be surprised to see Boyd go there.

But someone might surprise with Boyd in the 1st round.

I'll be looking for Latham and Boyd's name when the list is available.
