Brimestone Cup and rivalry https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15256 Here are a couple of excerpts from said thread: quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by lethargytartare A little history: I was present at the Barnburner's organizational meetings when the notion of a Fire-Burn rivalry trophy was first discussed. The original notion was to create something like the traditional trophies of college football lore like the Little Brown Jug of Minnesota-Michigan contests, or the Paul Bunyan's Axe of the Minnesota-Wisconsin rivalry (pardon the big-ten slant). HalaMadrid took point on the issue, but at subsequent monthly meetings had no progrfess to report. EVER. For months his response to the group was "we've got it under control". No information or planning was shared with the Barnburners. More months passed. People stopped caring. Suddenly, a trophy had been purchased. No barnburner input as to the trophy design was ever sought or given. Just as suddenly, there were rules for awarding the trophy. See above for general Barnburner participation. The simple truth is, this has never been about the fans in general, at least not here in chicago. It's always been about a certain someone feeling cool by handing a trophy out. The whole point about such a trophy SHOULD be to add sparkle to the regular season contests. We SHOULD know the day schedules are released on what day, and what pitch, the trophy will be decided. We shouldn't need such a trophy to gloss the accomplishment of defeating a rival in the open cup or MLS playoffs. The current method of determination is just plain silly, and only the egos of those who made the rules in the first place stand in the way of rectifying the situation. On this end, anyway, hardly anyone in the club knows or cares how or when the trophy is awarded anymore, and since none of us were asked for input in the first place (and many were actively discouraged from participating) I'm not gonna hold my breath waiting for them to listen to us now. other than that, Jambon is right, and ElJefe is wrong. mh quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by ElJefe I'll put it to you this way: I'm very open to the idea that I'm on the wrong side of this issue. However, I personally would prefer to see if this year's situation is the norm or if it's the exception that proves the rule. If it happens again next year, I would personally take that as strong persuasion that perhaps changes need to be made. And I'm personally not opposed tooth-and-nail to the idea of a regular-season-only trophy. I think that it fails to pay homage to the history of this rivalry, but that's OK. I'd still sleep OK at nights. But whatever we do, we should do it and stick with it. If we're going to do an "all results in a calendar year" trophy, let's do it and stick with it, no matter what circumstances may arise. If we're only going to count regular-season results, let's do it and stick with it, no matter what circumstances may arise. End Quotes Let's 'open the doors' and try to take a fresh perspective on the great rivalry between the Fire and the Burn. We all know that there are plenty of supportive fans from both teams who have passionately participated in this rivalry. Even though 'not everyone' gets to come to BigSoccer.com and express their FANaticism for this rivalry, we all have friends who enjoy it with a BURNing FIRE. Let's do our part to help build MLS into what it 'should be' by helping spur rivalries like ours. Let's decide if we want to take a regular season, head-to-head outcome; or let the 'completed season' dictate 'bragging rights'. IF ALL MLS FANS SUPPORTED RIVALRIES AND GOT THE SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL MEDIA, AS WELL AS MLS MANAGEMENT - IT COULD SERVE AS A TREMENDOUS MARKETING TOOL IN BUILDING THE GAME WE LOVE IN THE U.S. The fans that've read my posts on this matter know my position. Please take the time to read ALL opinions on this matter and decide how YOU want to approach this. If you feel like the Inferno and Barnburners leadership have already decided the matter, then please make an effort to take a new, fresh look at the situation and 'put your two cents worth' in anyway. I know this may sound 'corny', but - TOGETHER WE REALLY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! BURN VS. FIRE FOREVER!
