What about him? That he's going to turn 18 in October and be gone right after that transfer window opens that winter, getting Szetela (a downgrade) as compensation?

Enjoy him while it lasts, because this is Gaven's last season in the red and black. Unless he moves to ACM.

What makes you think he is leaving for Europe already? He is going to have his first US Nats match on July 11th. He isn't moving to Europe yet anytime soon. He is going to stay here for a good while. Which means that they aren't going to take him if he doesn't play a certain ammount of matches for the National Team. Those transfer rules sir. Don't forget that.

He is a Metro and cut the crap about him already Euro bound

The fact that this match doesn't mean much considering how the league is structured?

Irish passport, appeals board, less strict rules of transfer.

Fact of the matter is, we're going to start having a decent amount of people leave for Europe in the next few years. MLS can't compete salarywise and US players, particularly ones who have Gaven's talent, are highly in demand. Be patronizing all you want, but even if he can't get an Irish passport, there are other European leagues than the EPL.

umm, by all accounts, gaven is a metro here and now and at least until the end of the season. gaven's assist was stuff of supermen.

If he has an Irish passport, he counts as an EU player, so he's "domestic" in any league in an EU nation.

I thought he tried previously to obtain an Irish passport, only to be denied.

Despite the lopsided score, I noticed these bright spots in the game:
    1. The announcers. Does Wynalda know the game or what? He called the Nelsen header goal before it happended!
    2. Gaven. A classy goal and a world-class assist. Arena must have been very happy. This kid is the real deal.
    3. Guevara. Some great ball skills and possession.

Wynalda did the same thing when Dayak scored against DC a few weeks ago. The guy can see holes in defenses, that's for sure.

Gaven's assist was impressive indeed - well, the work leading to it was. The assist itself... I'm not sure if it was a shot or a pass.

There was nothing good for Metros or their fans in this game. The ugliest loss I have seen by a team with the roster it has. For the score, the rival and the rivalry this team could not have done worse. By a rookie coach too. Brilliant!

OK after the DC game i was ready to throw up. At the end of the game i didn't care that they had scored two goals 6-2 is not a good score, I play on a team that really isn't that good and even we don't lose that badly. Even though I did like Eddie Gaven's goal but other than that I never wanna have to watch another metrostars game like that again, I didn't sleep all night on saturday cause of that game.

FYI - The Metros just played 5 games in the last 15 days! They looked very tired to me. A very bad mistake by Walker, and the Metros could not recover. It's only one game - nothing to panic over.

What makes you think MLS is going to sell him after the season. He might have the ability to obtain an Irish passport but i do not see the league selling him when they know there is a good chance they will be losing Convey, Beasley and Donovan all before next season.

Maybee if a team comes in with huge money for him, but i doubt that is going to happen with the rest of the world undervaluing our talent. When he is 20-21 that when i see him making the jump.

IMOX77: I agree with you. Gaven is not going to leave right away for Europe at the end of the season. I think TigerPunk is already expecting this move to happen. The kid is only 17 for christ sakes. Let him develop for an entire season. He just got four goals in three matches that raises eyebrows I agree, but that doesn't mean he is on the way out to Europe. Irish Passport or not these Euro clubs want great American players but paying in cheep prices.

Eddie Gaven is a Metro till he is ready to make that hugh jump. Also I think if Gaven does go to Europe at 17, they will make him ride the bench, then it's going to be another Landon Donovan situation and since Bruce already gave Gaven the nod to join the US National Team for this coming Sunday's friendly against Poland we will see if he will get his first Cap.

Eddie Gaven is a Metro now and till he decides to move to Europe that's fine, but he is not leaving at the end of this season TigerPunk. So take it easy and enjoy the Gaven conversion.

  20. Agreed.

As much as I'm biased, I still know the difference between a guy like eskandarian (5 goals in 3 games) and gaven (4 goals in 3 games). But chances are europe doesn't. As far as I can tell, with the exception of goalkeepers they won't look at a US player til they've seen him either play a foreign team (like convey against spurs) or play on the national team (like beasley). Until then, its just meaningless MLS as far as the euros are concerned. It's not right but it's true, and luckily for you guys it will mean gaven will leave probably 2 years later than he should.

I mean, nobody's going to swoop in for eskandarian. And if you're in europe and looking at tons of players, eskandarian and gaven seem comprable, even tho gaven is no doubt the more skilled player.

IIRC Italy has a restriction on how many non EU players you can have and Holland has some sort of minimum wage requirement for non EU players, but for now England is the hardest. But as superdave said if Gaven can get an EU passport, its a moot point.

People have been predicting this for so many years now that the claim is just absurd. I will bet you ten thousand dollars that Gaven will be in MLS next season. And even if I'm wrong this time, the exodus, which has been predicted year after year, just hasn't materialized. Until there's some objective evidence of it, you're just blowing hot air like many before you.

I can't comment on Gaven's passport options. I do believe he can't sign for Europe (unless he's got a passport from an EU Nation) until he's 18--otherwise he's just a youth player on youth teams--not very attractive to him.

As for the argument that he isn't scouted by foreign talent--that's not accurate in the least. There were a ton of scouts at the U19 WC tournament with Adu and Szetala. European talent is pretty aware of Eddie Gaven.

The most likely reason why he's not going to Europe any time soon is that MLS is not willing to give up it's young talent (Convey, Beasley, Donovan and now add Gaven to the list) without a premium. It's turned down several offers for Beasley already b/c the league felt they weren't high enough.

It's one thing to sell McBride or Bocanegra or Eddie Lewis--all fine talents but guys who've paid their dues to MLS and are no longer 19-20-21-22. It's another to sell a player that likely appeals to the next generation of season ticket holders (ie: teenagers) and can conceiveably play for the USA for the next 3 world cups.
