Okay, people, let's make a concerted effort to see how this is covered tonight. We've got: NBC 5pm CBS 5:30pm Fox 9pm WGN 9pm CBS 10pm NBC 10pm ABC 10pm Stake your claim so we can get maximum reporting on the reporting. Later, COZ
NBC 5's was about a 30 second segment. I was hoping for more but I guess the Bulls are more important.
hey man if i don't find out who the bulls lost to on sunday nights then i can't start the work week off right.
CBS 2 update. Apparently we draw 10K to 12K fans a game and occasionally more. The anchors said that this is a short time table for building a stadium. Once again the bulls are the much bigger story.
Both NBC and CBS used the story as a segue to throw it over to the sports guy. Both of them had their anchors report the story, and it was covered before the Bulls. Both of them teased the story, NBC right before the sports segment, CBS two segments prior. CBS was harsh about the cost and team's draw, with the sports guy saying they average 10 to 12K. Also, they really could use a bigger news desk. Later, COZ
CBS just had a nice little blurb. Pics from the announcement, of the rendering, and some game footage. It was a generally positive piece, and the news anchor chick seemed suprised at the short timeframe to completion.
Oh, and we should probably add the Final Word on Fox to the list. NBC's Sports Sunday isn't on this week. I also encourage you all to watch for mention of the stadium on Fox's Arrested Development. Which is to say, you should watch it, it's hysterical. Later, COZ
At first I thought it was a bit harsh too, but after thinking about it, I feel more like they just felt like they had to get theirt two cents in. At least Howard Sudbury said that with the 10-12K draw, 'they'll be OK'. So with the 17-20 we should really expect, we should be kicking ass right?
We led on CLTV at 6pm, complete with footage of Leiwicke and Peter, and a reporter on the scene reporting live. The sports segment from the previous hour mentioned it, too, but as the last item with no graphics. The male anchor on CBS was a jackass making stupid comments throughout the entire newscast, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over that. And, seriously, could he possibly have been sitting any closer to his co-anchor? Later, COZ
Yeah, they're pretty much on top of each other on that set. Ever see the WGN morning news show? Whenever they have a guest in studio, they wind up with half the regulars sitting on countertops behind the main desk. It's pretty weird.
I'm disappointed there weren't any recognizable news anchors present. Were they all watching the Bulls, or spending quality time with their family, or visiting the Pleasure Chest, or . . . ?
I saw nothing at all about the stadium on "Mosaic: World News from the Middle East" on World Link TV. My son was watching a freaky show called "Boobahs" and they just basically made weird musical notes and danced, but no word about the stadium. Now, I'm watching Friday's episode of "Monk" that I taped, as I was working in the city while it was on. I'll listen for announcements. Wait...here's something... no... Monk just asked for something to wipe his hands with.
WGN's report was pretty nice. About a 60-120 second report. They had B roll of The Mayor accepting his jersey, artist rendition, and even had a short interview with the Chan. Best one so far.
...and some really ridiculous closeups of the artists rendition. WGN put the story in the regular newscast, but ignored it on the 20-minute sports show following. Fox went the other way around, with no mention until late in The Final Word, where they showed Don Garber. ABC had it as the last sports story, but were pretty positive, with Peter at the podium. This morning on Fox: That schmuck Bruce Wolf was a total jackass about the news. The contempt just oozing of his slackjacked mouthbreathing lips. The hatred of soccer beaming out of his beady eyes. The news almost ruffled that helmet of a hair-do. Now I used to get a kick outta him on Johnny B's show , but this guy is a real turd. How does he keep a job? Not that Fow news in the morning is all that credible to start with , but c'mon!? He said : Oh, yeah , the chicago Fire , they're a soccer team...announced plans to build a stadium in Bridgeview......The stadium will be ready in 2006 and maybe by 2006 I'll care about soccer, just need another World Cup under my belt. What a puke. Although the co-anchor (Asian woman, name escapes me) said : "Hey kudos for even including the Fire in your segment Bruce." To which he rolled his eyes shrugged and shuffled his papers. DlCK.
If it's any consolation, I used to play hockey against the little twit. When his team beat ours in the playoffs, he touted it when he was on the Steve and Gary show. We never forgot, and the next year we laid him out good. That was his last year of playing.
The Tribune came close to a total snub. No mention in the sports section at all, and a small article in the Metro Section, no photo, buried amid articles about the tax bills being mailed and immigrants registering to vote. Sunday's sports section had a tiny article by Jack McCarthy (has he ever written an article about soccer without a major factual error) which said Peter Wilt was not available for comment. Yeah, right. Please recall that the Welfare for McCaskey stadium was given multiple articles in Metro, Sports, front page, you name it. For forty years the Tribune has printed every bogus press relsease about the proposed domed stadium on the lakefront, including artist's rendition. That stadium still hasn't been built but it sure got a lot of publicity. My father always said you don't need to go to the editorial page of the Tribune to find its bias. You can find that on every page. On a related note, have you seen the threads elsewhere on Bigsoccer blasting the announcement of making fun of it? When other cities got their SSS I was thrilled. I guess this comes from the same types who gloated over our exile in Naperville.
41, have respect for your elders!!! That all happened in the late 80s. It wasn't I who ran him over, but we were thumping him all night and I got a couple of licks in. Every hit was followed with "Nice reporting Wolf!" . Whack! "Report that!" The great thing about hockey is it is largely self-policing. Also I would categorize his hockey skills as pathetic.
The Firehouse got about 2 minute segment on Channel 5, with no snickering and even carried a portion of Peter's speech.
