Briana Scurry was injured in a professional game in 2010, and has not played since.

This past February, though, hope came in the form of a new diagnosis. Scurry was found to have an inflammation of the occipital nerve behind her left ear, which was caused by that knee to the other side of her head. She is scheduled to undergo radical surgery Oct. 17 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, which she hopes will eliminate her severe headaches and allow her to begin to return to her normal routine of speaking, coaching and public appearances.

I was unaware of the severity of her injury. Concussions certainly are a big issue in the women's game, ending the playing careers of two great former UNC players, Cindy Parlow and Lori Chalupny as well.

Scurry contributed a huge amount to the early fame of the USWNT and the game owes her a debt. Best of luck to her for a full recovery and a great life, post soccer!

Wow - a speedy recovery to Bri! By coincidence, the Georgetown women's side is playing St. John's at home on Oct. 17 - the pitch, Shaw Field, is adjacent to the hospital and its helipad (the Hoyas stop play if a Medstar helicopter lands during a game). The crowd should keep her in its thoughts.

Briana Scurry couldn’t be sure if it was the painkillers or the fact that surgeons had just plucked pea-size balls of damaged tissue from the back of her head. But when the two-time Olympic goalkeeper and Women’s World Cup champion awoke at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital on Oct. 18, the headache that had hijacked her life for the past 3-1/2 years was gone.
