MOTM against Charlotte Hear from the GGGaffer after our victory in the Queen City 👑 #cf97 pic.twitter.com/70OZFXZfdl— Chicago Fire FC (@ChicagoFire) May 19, 2025
https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/what-we-learned-orlando-city-are-legit-marco-reus-rescues-la-galaxy Gutiérrez has been a year away from being a year away since 2021. The 21-year-old has long been a useful MLS player, but we’ve all been waiting for him to make the leap in midfield. Don’t look now, but that's unfolding before our eyes. Playing not quite as a No. 10 and not quite as a No. 8, Gutiérrez has thrived in his fluid role on the left side of Berhalter’s midfield trio. He's blossoming as a goal threat and taking higher-quality shots, all while upping his progressive passing and defensive actions. Fresh off the best game of his career with two goals and an assist in a 4-1 win at Charlotte FC, the homegrown US international is thriving – and doesn’t show signs of slowing down.
That's nonsense. He has three non-penalty goals in the season, two the first match of the season and this past weekend, and two penalties. He also missed the sitter of all sitters. Again, I am encouraged, but what the article states is just silly.
He had probably his best game ever so everyone gets excited and to get clicks, writers jump on board with popular opinion. They claim he’s taking better shots but he had some stinkers this game but then scored. I think that’s pretty normal for him but saying that doesn’t encourage clicks.
It’s not the total, it’s the Per90 that is garnering the attention…. Here’s an article from late March…note how many midfielders are above 0.37xG/90 Note Guti’s Per90G-PK has doubled two years in a row and are now higher than his npxG Clearly there is much more to deliver this level of performance throughout the season…this is what Guti and many of us have been looking forward to! Hope he stays healthy and delivers his best season yet!
This is nonsense. There are other measures of quality besides goals scored, and we can’t make fun of the dopey concept that penalty goals don’t count while then excluding them to try to prove a point.
The whole article is nonsense. I am NOT excluding penalties. Actually, I guess I did, but that was not my intent. Thanks for pointing that out, Harry! I was highlighting the stupidity of denigrating them. The people around here who have been discounting penalties have been suspiciously quiet about young Brian G "padding his stats" by scoring 40% of his goals this season from the penalty spot. Apparently, penalties count only when "their guy" scores them! Of course, I am thrilled Brian G is scoring goals (regardless of what "type" they all count the same, of course!), and we need him to score consistently. With no second striker, we need Gutierrez and Zinckernagel to carry the load. I'd like to see him setting up some goals, as well. Basically, Brian G doing well should mean the Fire doing well. But let's temper the hype train a bit.
No reason to hype excessively, but at least enjoy that the Fire have players that are making TOTW and being talked about. And this week, let's enjoy that Guti played like he did on Saturday
Y'all are so anchored you can't have rational discourse... The article posted above is specifically about npG because the taker is not decided by a player's actions on the pitch. The Guti FBref stats highlighted are npG because the 'in play' goals are much more apples to apples...and the Per90 makes it meaningfully more so. Our HG is improving and yall can't not sh!t on it. I'm fulling expecting the next red herring will be xG...and more wrong thread Shaq Nutriding/trolling
I am and I do No need to "hype excessively" and yet you post this crap?: That is simply dumb. 1) "late March" is f'ing meaningless. That was just a few matches into the season. 2) If you had posted that on Saturday afternoon, "Guti’s Per90G-PK" would NOT have doubled "two years in a row." That is the most ridiculous cherry-picking of stats imaginable. Let's see what happens between now and the end of the season. We ALL want him to do well. We are paying him like a star, he needs to play like one, every (well, almost every) match.
I am not shitting on it, as I have said consistently. In pretty much every post I have explained that I am happy that he is improving. xG is f'cking stupid, as I have said for years.
This is the Guti Nutriding thread and your sh!t on it response was ‘that’s nonsense. he has 3 npG” It’s not cherry picking, it’s where we are. Per90 normalized the data no matter where you are in the season and accounts for players missing games for things like camp cupcake and injury. Now you are ok with including money in the discussion? Thats rich! I’ll Ill pull those numbers in a bit lol
Simmer down there, tiger. You accuse me of things I have not written and, apparently, do not read what I did. Which is fine, but your anger is getting the better if you, once again.
I’m happy until the wet blankets come trolling… GGG’s post game speech and game ball granting is a perfect example of how the team viewed Guti’s performance this week!
Things like expecting a 19yr old HG to play as well (or better! lol) than a club record signing that ‘starred’ in the EPL and World Cups.
