Just incase anyone wanted to see how Ching gets covered over here in Hawaii.

    http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007704170303

Pretty good article. Was mentioned on the front page of the paper and had a full color spread in the Hawaii section.

Typically there is a blurb about Houston after they play, especially when Ching scores or gets injured.

Anyway! Just thought you might be interested!

That is such a bullshit article with all the loaded anti-soccer phrases they used. I mean it was a good profile, but the guy who wrote it obviously isn't a fan.

what's wrong with the article? I think you're being a little sensitive. I think it's great. not everybody follows soccer or reads BS every day.....

what anti-soccer phrases? 1-0 games do sometimes cause riots. big deal.

This quote is absolutely horrible. He hits on two stereotypes about the sport in one sentence, low scoring and riots. Not only that, but the way it's worded is bad too.

Man, some people need to step away from Big Soccer occasionally. The story was about a local boy done good. Period!

Hey Scaryice, did you even notice that the story wasn't a sports story? It was in the Local News section, and I thought it was a cool story.

    Thanks for posting it Midwestsurfer.

Before you criticize a feature article, you should look at who the target audience is. This piece was meant to introduce a soccer player to people that are not familiar with Ching, and most likely MLS. That "quote" as you call it, isn't the greatest, but it's not that big an exaggeration either. Soccer isn't known for high scoring games. It's also known for hooliganism, that do riot sometimes.

To be honest, I think the writer did a good job describing what Ching does in Houston. Don't be so critical.

    I agree with scary.

I'd also wager that in the US there were more sports initiated riots than in France or Germany over the last 25 years.

Let's not stray from what he meant. The writer didn't say anything about where those riots occur. Just that they can.

Okay well I'd guess nonsoccer riots in the US outnumber soccer riots in the US by 999 to 1.

Just don't think it is a valid statement in any sense of the word to equate soccer and riots anymore than it is valid to say that when Boston wins the world series peolpe will be killed in post game celebrations.

I think the writer was being a little sarcastic myself.

And even if he wasn't, he does a good job describing the kind of person Ching is.

It was hardly an anti-soccer piece. To me its great seeing MLS get any mention in a market that only has two players in all of MLS and gets its Prime Time ESPN2 games at 1 every thursday (beats sat @ 8am I guess).

    I don't think it was anti-soccer.

I think it was passively passing on an ant-isoccer anti-alien culture myth.

1-0 games causing riots is similar as someone saying '(American) Football is a game enjoyed by fat white Americans who don't know the difference between Latvia and Libia.'

I thought he was just saying 1-0 games cause more passion than 1-0 games in other sports Americans are familiar with. Chill out, people.

OMG was that author making fun of soccer? He can suck my _______ and if I ever see him i'll club his @$$.

It's written from the perspective and for people who don't follow soccer about a local boy made good. Soccer is still foreign to a lot of people in America, including media, and I don't believe it is super popular in Hawaii. So don't make anything more out of it then it is. I can only assume he meant that goals are a huge deal in a low scoring game, and that soccer fans are very passionate about the game.

Sure, if you want to pick and choose 2 small countries to fit your logic. Since North America is a continent, let's frame that statistic between US & Canada, and Europe.

    Who wins now? LOL

There's a Brian Ching reference in this article about his cousins, who play HS soccer in Idaho:
