Thank you Oscar for all these years of service to the brazilian basketball and the sport in general. You're the best brazilian basketball player of all time, and a record breaker. Obrigado! Oscar anuncia o fim de sua carreira como jogador profissional O Globo On Line RIO - O ala Oscar Schmidt, do Flamengo, anunciou no início da tarde desta segunda-feira que está deixando as quadras. I remember seeing him at the 1996 Olympics. All he did was shoot. I think he was 45 years old back then too.
No. He turned 45 this year. The 1996 Olympics was his farewell to the national team. He broke the olympic record of points back then, I think.
No way he is 45. Wasn't he on a team that beat the USA in 86 or 88. Seem to remmeber him being old then. He has to be in his 50's.
He was 45 years old then too. In fact, he was 45 when he played with Dr. James Naismith with a peach basket and a soccer ball.
In the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/27/sports/othersports/27oscar.html?tntemail0 Heres a paragraph: He leaves the court after a 26-year career with a handful of achievements that might never be surpassed. By an unofficial count, Oscar has scored 49,703 points in a career with various clubs and with Brazil's national team. By contrast, the N.B.A.'s career scoring leader, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, scored 38,387 points.
When money isnt everything Oscar gave me some of my greatest sports memories. First back in 1980 at the USSR Olympics when he played in his first of 5 olympics. He was 22 and was instantly recognoized as a great player. Then in 1987 when the Brazilian team took the Gold from the US in Indianapolis. Ive always been a hardcore Brazil basketball national team fan and Oscar will never be forgotten. In days where its ALL about money, OSCAR REFUSED to come play in the NBA in 1984 because that would have disqualified him from ever playing on the National team again (it wasnt allowed back then). Had OSCAR come to the NBA he would have EASILY become a legend in America. His style was much like a Larry Bird. He was a scoring machine and holds many many records in scoring. Thanks OSCAR!
Back in the 1987 asswhipping on the US Oscar was 29. At the age of 26 in 1984 he was drafted by the New Jersey (York at the time?) Nets but decided to play in Italy for 12 years where he wouldnt lose his rights to play on the Brazilian national team.
Oscar will always be 45 years old, just as Freddy Adu will always be 13 years old. Seriously, congratulations to him on a great career.
Re: When money isnt everything Oscar good player? Sure Oscar NBA legend? Highly doubtful With the NBA three point line where it is compared to the joke international point line and no zone defense in the NBA, Oscar would had been a pretty decent 6th man. Look the player everyone said was the best player outside of the NBA ever, Toni Kukoc, came to the US and has barely made an impact here. Kukoc in his prime was better than Oscar.
Plus, Oscar can shoot but he wouldn't have been able to defend NBA players. If you don't play defense in the NBA (especially at 2 or 3), you're not going to survive.
