Handball in 10th minute inside the area. Looked like a good pk call. It's unfortunate that it happened early in the game but Onyewu made himself bigger.
Correct call though hard to swallow. Close enough to not have been called though. I guess that is a perfect ITOOTR
Early consensus here seems to be that it was a good call. Can I ask why? I've been reading these boards for a while and hear a lot about how handball has to be intentional (and/or the player can't be making himself bigger). It looked like Gooch was trying to pull his arms into his body. If that's the case, why the call?
I would say it didn't look like what you say it looks like at all. It looks to me like he was pulling his arm UP, which is not the same as "in".
I rewound and watched it again... gotta admit it does look more up then in. I guess I should take off my U.S. glasses
The correct wording is deliberate, not intentional (if it were judged intentional it would have drawn a yellow card), though it's a debate of soccer semantics. But generally, it is interpreted that if the arm is in an unnatural position (basically anything else than at the sides), even if the player doesn't move the arm to play the ball after it is kicked (which may still have happened on this play), the handball is still judged deliberate and therefor an offense.
The first couple of decisions the players acted like it was a serious game...so maybe he upped his excitement to match the players. We get a zoomed out view, he's actually talking to them.
I recognize and expected the consensus here. It certainly fits deliberate handling from how we've been instructed. I think the counterargument would be that Onyewu's arm is naturally up as he moves laterally and then the ball is struck at him. He certainly has no time to bring it down to his side. So his best chance/option is to try to tuck it in. The additional point to support that argument is that there's really no reason for Onyewu to handle there. Now, all that said, this probably still qualifies as him making himself bigger and having the arm up in the first place is a deliberate action. We always say that we can't and aren't supposed to read minds, so in the end this probably has to be a penalty for deliberate handling--not calling it just opens up too many possibilities for an inconsistent application of the Law. Nonetheless, plays like this probably argue for better and/or more subjective standards in regards to deliberate handling. That was hard enough to swallow, as someone said above, in the 10th minute of a nearly meaningless friendly. Imagine this sort of call decided a World Cup match? In summation, this is probably a good penalty call based on current instruction. But hopefully it raises the point with some about whether or not those instructions are what's best for the game.
At least Donovan takes risks...and they're surrounding him. Torres gets the ball and stops dead looking for someone to pass to. RUN at the players and create space, don't just stop. First 10 mins were were great...suddenly in the last few minutes we remembered how we were playing. It's annoying that we can't keep that up, we gotta learn how. I like that the ref isn't treating this like much of a Friendly, gotta learn that refs are gonna call this stuff because apparently the US guys don't know that.
I wish they would show some replays...I'd like to see a second look on whether or not that goal may have been offside.
I have an issue with the penalty call against Onyewu. The distance from the kicker to Onyewu is perhaps 7 yards. The ball plays him not his arm playing the ball. His arm is not extended or in an unnatural position. Can Donovan possibly maintain possession in this match? It would be appreciated.
Wow the US are being jerks...whats the deal? First Cherundolo and now Jones? Guys are up in their heads making really stupid decisions.
Jones could very easily have been sent off for that tackle. Interesting that Maruffo had to point the caution out to the referee.
I think the referee has been very good. Not bringing out the cautions early would have put him in worse shape now.
He's dealing with children today apparently. The US players are all upset cause they can't get anything done. The Brazilian players are young and whiney used to getting what they want. Marcelo is just awful, during El Clasicos and all other times.
Marcelo had no business remaining on the field. That was a clear send off offense. Neymar reminds me of Woodstock.
Nah you're never gonna get a red card with that...he didn't make any contact with his cleats. Take of the Fan goggles.
