    Dermonger,

Glad you enjoyed your stay here in Brazil. Truly, if your dream is to live here I say go for it. You will not regret it. Just make sure you do your research before coming down, and learn Portuguese :)

As for the look you got, it is probably because Bahia is a poor state generally speaking. In fact, the entire Brazilian North East has that reputation and for good reason. Aside from their respective capitals, the Northeast states are poor and un-developed. Yes, I agree that Bahia is a beautiful and magical place. But if you want MY PERSONAL opinion, you can preserve that magic by only vacationing in Bahia, and not living there.

My suggestion would be to live in either the South or South East of Brazil. You will have an all around easier time with everything from employment to quality of life.

But of course as with everything else in this world, everybody has their own slice of happiness. So like I said in the beginning, do your research on Brazil. Find the best place for you to live and work.

Oh, and I hope you are not perceving Brazil as nothing more than a year round Carnival party good for nothing more than fun in the sun and sex. I hope you are not one of those people. Before ever dreaming of moving down you must respect Brazil as a real country....never forgetting that we are not just some "banana republic" but a country with, among other things, one of the largest economoies in the world, one of the largest industry parks in the world, etc.....

    hey guys,

I know there has been a lot of talk about the pele movie, but appearantly there is going to be a small film on Socrates as well. According to the article (in Spanish) el presidente Lula along with other politicos played a game which was filmed for the movie. Socrates seems like an interesting guy with obvious strong opinions.

King Rooster, thank you for offering your opinion. Greatly appreciated. This is something I intend to do a lot of research about. I encountered many a people that relocated to Salvador, and am trying to learn information and advice as to make the same move as they did. I think to own your own business of your own kind being a foreigner is the only way to live in Salvador and live relatively comfortably. The interior of Bahia is poorer and undeveloped compared to Salvador. While Salvador is not exactly rich compared to the south it does offer opportunities compared to it`s interior.

With regards to the last paragraph, yes it`s true many tourists get caught up in that sort of thinking, but I am also born in S.America and lived in it`s poorest country (Guyana) and have somewhat of a understanding of life in S.America. I respect Brazil for all it`s good and bad (note: I feel the good far outweighs the bad). This is something that will take years, and won`t be done overnight. I am not afraid to give up the wealthier lifestyle I have here in Canada to move there. Money isn`t everything in life.

It`s very hard to speak to people here in Canada and educate them about Brazil without getting angry. It`s always labelled as a "3rd world nation" by them and also I am asked absurd questions/stereotypes such as: "How is your Spanish after being there?", "How could you go there by yourself, didn`t you watch the movie City of God, it`s dangerous there?" "Brazil has a lot of AIDS, right?" "Don`t the women walk the beaches naked?"

This was my second time in Brazil, and I am glad I didn`t buy into these absurd stereotypes/misinformation and ignorance.

"Don`t the women walk the beaches naked?"

Wish it were true. Not even a miserable topless. Could be worse though. They could go to the beaches fully clothed like in Hong Kong. Thank God for those g-strings. :)

Funny you mention that because a Dutch woman on her first trip to Brazil, when I was in Salvador was fined for going on a beach topless.
