this is why i cant get on board with him as a starter for the nats. i dont know what genks deal is in not starting him full time, but thats whats still going on. club doesnt trump everything else, but part time (even usual) starter in belgium doesnt exactly help the case for starting for the usmnt. but to say on topic genk seem pretty dumb to me.
Lucumi is their most talented CB. But, I think they expected that they would have sold him by now which is why they signed McKenzie.
As for the NT, the starter next to Brooks is still open enough for me that I lean either way. I don't necessarily see him as a starter either, but at the same time the one people are penciling in (Richards) has been injured on and off for months, and still has his club situation up in the air. Part time starter in Belgium is still not half bad, all things considered. As for McKenzie and Genk specifically, I don't mind. I think people look at a Pulisic and Reyna and want constant exponential growth. Maybe he should have earned a starting role by now, maybe Genk expected to sell Lucumi by now, who knows. But either way everyones path is different, and he's still young and playing for a team that clearly invested in him and have a long term plan for him.
And just like that, Shaktar scores and the series must be over now. Shaktar dribbles into the box, Lucumi goes to ground but gets dribbled past, ball sent back across goal and a free man slam it home. I also think it was one of the FBs who lost the free man and left Cuesta to cover two attackers. I wonder if part of the delay to selling Lucumi was seeing how they did in CL, so if they bomb out now maybe that means Lucumi will be sold soon.
that cool and all, but whos the second guy keeping mckenzie out of important matches? is that the scenario, hes really the time-share second/third cb? im not intending any of this as confrontational or putting it on you to rationalize, im just not familiar with genk, and mckenzie is my only interest here.
Even though they have played together before I think Genk are trying to play a Left Footer on the Left and a Right Footer on the Right. So Lucumi/McKenzie battle for the LCB role while Cuesta/Sadick battle for the RCB role.
I believe McKenzie has started 4 of 5 games for Genk this season prior to today. If you're asking who he sat for in that 1 game prior, it was again Lucumi.
Yeah Genk really had no answer, even Lucumi was sent to the ground on the first goal and the attacker wasn't bothered. Probably for the best they crash out now, sell Lucumi, and McKenzie wins the LCB spot and gets Europa League minutes.
In the Colombian forum there has been mention of Lucumi going to Atalanta. But that rumor has been around for months so we shall have to wait and see.
Genk defender Jhon Lucumi is reportedly closing in on a move to Atalanta meaning Mark McKenzie might become a consistent starter if that happens. After starting opening three matches, McKenzie has watched from sidelines. #USMNT— Larry Henry Jr (@lhenry019) August 25, 2021
There seems to be a significant amount of defensive talent coming from Colombia. Obviously Lucumi and Cuesta but, also Yerson Mosquera who signed for Wolves this summer.
